I wrote a little something for @GIBiz . About Chinese F2P games and how they have been changing the landscape of the industry, to some degrees. I tried to provide some insight into "work culture" in Chinese companies, as I feel that's something still very rarely touched upon.

Finished "Mafia: The Old Country". 10/10, for me. Even with its predictable story beats, the execution is above most seen in the industry!. Beautiful, very very beautiful! .This one will stay with me for a very long time. It's everything I want from this medium! .@mafiagame

Also, mobile developers are not lesser than others, like a lot of these narratives have been suggesting. Most developers in China working on AAA games have a background on mobile games. The people who made Black Myth Wukong were "mobile developers".

I'm not trying to take anything away from Yang Bing's incredible and brave journey in bringing this game to fruition!. I'm excited for whatever the studio does next!. Still, we shouldn't romanticize these things. We're talking about GIGANTIC corporations involved here!.

Tencent owns at least 10% of Ultizero Games since 2021. Plus, the studio had access to multiple sources of VC founding. It wasn't just Sony pitching in!. It's important to understand this when "painting" the narrative of Lost Soul Aside's development!

Lost Soul Aside's development resulted in its creator Yang Bing losing his hair, his girlfriend and seemingly his sanity in a 10 year long journey. We have confirmation that the game that just released was a result of a full reboot in development back in 2020. Here's the full

Contrary to my claims, Final Destination Bloodlines is actually not censored in China. I'm usually pretty meticulous with these things, but didn't check well enough here. Apologies if I mislead anyone, and thank you to the film's director @adamstein for pointing this out to me.

Over US$18 Million for the latest Final Destination at the Chinese box-office in 10 days. Roughly the same as Fantastic 4 and Superman did in China, combined. As I predicted, Final Destination is doing fairly well in this market. Expected to reach $25M!. #死神来了血脉诅咒. 🧵

Contrary to my claims in this thread, the movie is actually not censored in China, from what I could gather. I'm usually pretty meticulous about these things, but this one time I didn't research enough, is when I was wrong. Apologies if I mislead anyone with that.

A great milestone for the Hong Kong-Shenzhen-Guangzhou Greater Bay Area. San Jose-San Francisco is 3rd, further cementing it as the Lesser Bay Area.

Btw, I'm playing the game in Sicilian, but switched to English just during this race. The copilot gives important instructions, and there's no way I can be reading the subtitles while managing tight turns at high speed!.

To be clear, I mean the "instinct" and perception that we (as in seasoned gamers/observers) accumulate and sharpen over the years. Not saying just me! duh.

I'm not happy to predict a game will flop, but. Recruiters and paying folks do often reach out to me for stuff so here's another "I tend to be right on my predictions", and there's no amount of data or analytics that can replace that decades-long instinct called experience.

@hubertuss03 I think this is a relatively niche title to be honest. I don't expect it to sell through the roof or anything like that. I also don't expect reviews to be kind. But we'll see.

I should be more precise: international horror movies do well in China!. Chinese ones actually do infamously bad. Alien Romulus had its biggest market in the world in China, while also being censored!. Data for box office comes from reliable tracker Maoyan Pro:

The movie grossed over $300M worldwide. While the Chinese box-office might seem small, it truly isn't. The movie is heavily censored in China, got little marketing, and released long after the international debut. Horror movies do well in China!.

China is the biggest market in the world for Alien Romulus. 33% of the current worldwide box office for the movie is Chinese. That's more than US$93M in mainland China, out of $283M globally. Approx $90M in the USA. This, despite the film being censored in CN🧵. #异形夺命舰

Final Destination: Bloodlines will release in Mainland China, surprisingly. 3 months after its international debut, this is a film that could actually perform relatively well in China, depending on the marketing and how extensive cuts will be. #死神来了血脉诅咒

Hats off to whoever worked on the lighting and mise-en-scène in Mafia!. I'm in complete awe of the care and attention put into this title. It might be one of the most immersively detailed and polished worlds I've ever experienced in gaming. Truly, extraordinary!. @mafiagame
