We conclude that when viewed through a rich interpretation, some FC models can provide functional and interventionist explanations, in addition to the non-causal and non-mechanistic ones we have discussed in other publications. Therefore, some FC models are explanatory.

A rich interpretation, by contrast, interprets additional structures and doesn't treat edges as explanatory relations. We show that structural connectivity, which is not considered problematic by the "wrong stuffers", also isn't explanatory under an austere interpretation.

An austere interpretation only provides an interpretation for a network's nodes and edges, leaving other structures uninterpreted, and assumes that the edges represent the explanatory relation.

Based on the distinction between austere and rich interpretations of scientific models, we argue against the "wrong stuff objection"—the idea that FC models in neuroscience aren't explanatory because they only represent correlations.
