It's a survival thriller about a scuba diver who's been swallowed by a 60-ton sperm whale & has 1 hour to escape before his oxygen runs out.

Of all the things that have happened with WHALEFALL, getting the cover of the New York Times Book Review is the one that still floors me. I might be a total cheeseball and frame it.
I won't use AI for anything. ANYTHING. I won't use it for research or to build a character's house plan for me or anything.
It's a slippery slope. Soon you start depending on it more or more. Take a stand for humanity.
Randomly watched a film & it reset my brain: Akira Kurosawa’s HIGH AND LOW (1963), a kidnapping investigation procedural with Hitchcock set pieces, Spielberg blocking and character & Scorsese wherewithal. A sheer joy to behold.

I am absolutely thrilled to announce ANGEL DOWN, a project I have been working on for years. It is the tale of an angel shot down during WWI -- and the hell that results. 🪽🪖
It is the first of two novels I will be doing with the wonderful

My sister has gone into surgery to remove a brain tumor. I’m not one for prayers but I do believe in finding solace in the parts of our world that are unfathomable & enduring.
Ive struggled to express this in interviews but it’s clear to me now: This is why the whale. ❤️
Horror/sf folks: I'm looking for examples of indie films that only ever show you a *glimpse* of the larger-scale horror. Think PONTYPOOL, or the TV-news segments of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. Or 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE (not really indie, I realize).
WHALEFALL is my 21st book, but seeing it hit so hard with people (as it hit so hard with me!) makes it feel like my first.
I can't wait for all of you to read it...
...and arise. 🐳
I’m sick in a hotel room… and worried about a dying sister… and then the world sends this balance.
A rave full review of WHALEFALL in the New York Times.
“Kraus brings the rigor of a scientist and the sensibility of a poet.” 🐳💔
My weirdest (and practically my favorite) book, BLOOD SUGAR, is *this close* to earning out. Can we push this thing over the edge???
The book is set on Halloween, so it's also the perfect season for it. 🍬🔪🍭☠️

“An absolute triumph, a masterpiece of suspense, emotion, and flat-out terror. A terrifying, invigorating, addictive thrill ride — and a reminder that Kraus is one of genre fiction’s best practitioners.” 🐳🥲
Folks, could you preorder WHALEFALL? I'm putting my entire mind & body into making this thing a success... but it won't work without you.
Sleepers, arise!
Thrilled to announce WHALEFALL is on the August 2023 Indie Next List. Thanks, booksellers!🐳
“This masterfully researched thriller weaves the story of a diver’s tumultuous relationship w/ his father w/ the primal terrors of the deep sea. Heart-pounding."
If you read an ARC of WHALEFALL and enjoyed it…consider owning a beautiful finished copy?
Sales in this first week are crucial for me to continue writing bonkers books like this. 🐳💚
En route to final destination of this leg of tour & hit a wall. I know it’s not all pointless. But it feels pointless. Will be driving from final Pittsburgh event to see my sister in her final days. Will try to manifest the idea of whale fall in her death. But it’s difficult.
Touched & excited to have inherited my friend Bill Ott’s
@HardCaseCrime
library. The last time I spoke to Bill, he talked about how much he loved my entry into the series.
These will get good use, I promise!
The narrator of the WHALEFALL audio had to be my beloved
@KirbyHeyborne
. Kirby has voiced
Rotters
Scowler
Trollhunters
Zebulon Finch
Blood Sugar
The Teddies Saga
The Ghost That Ate Us
...and along the way we've won 2 Odyssey Awards. He's the best.
Behold Malfi’s masterpiece!
In a world of drilled-down niche sub-sub-genre work (which I love!), here is a horror epic that can be embraced by nearly EVERYONE, from the horror diehards to that person who read one King book 15 years ago.
A rare accomplishment. Out 6/4.
Props to my Uber driver who learned I was on book tour & told me about the bestselling memoir she wanted to write called “What’s Your Flavor of Crazy?” and asked if I knew how she could get into ghostwriting porn. Mad respect. ✊
This Kirkus review of Peter Straub's GHOST STORY is one of the most bewildering things I've ever read.
"Largely cloned from the classic Night of the Living Dead, this is an overlong, lukewarm chiller with some superb moments..." Uh, what?
Went to DAWN OF THE DEAD today. I’ve seen this movie…a lot.
But this was my 1st time seeing it in a theater & I noticed so many details. The name of the store pregnant Frannie sits in front of. How the video game Peter plays echoes the ghetto raid. Big screens are important!
NPR has added a new intro to my WHALEFALL interview that says farewell to my sister, who died back in August. Thank you to

Nice shot from

of me accepting the Stoker. I'm pointing off toward the direction of all the stores where I could have purchased nicer clothing.
“STUNNING. A sensory epic. Kraus turns the literal guts of this novel into a haunted house, a torture chamber, a church, and a uterus for belated rebirth. There is nothing else quite like Whalefall.” 🐳💥
Another great thing about NOWSY: it functions equally as a popcorn fright flick and something way more sinister. If you watch closely, the full ramifications of the very end of the film are so complex and unsettling.
NO ONE WILL SAVE YOU is fun, fun, FUN. It is also smart and with great moments, staged in a classic, solid way. It avoids the pitfalls and maximizes its resources. I couldn't think of a more perfect movie for your weekend. Fulfills all the promise of SPONTANEOUS.
The Best Horror Books of 2023
"WHALEFALL is a towering, muscular, undeniably effective piece of survival horror that doubles as a kind of treatise on life itself, and marks what might be the crowning achievement in Kraus’ long, illustrious genre career."
