I believe this is a great opportunity for those "random persons who have been thanklessly maintaining a project since 2003" to get some support. If you want to try it out, the project is currently in a testing phase.

As you can see, my node-emoji project scores quite high there, because it is used in many sub-(sub-)(sub-(sub-)dependencies.

The project I have been trying out lately is called the @teaprotocol (made by the creator of homebrew). It takes an interesting approach, where projects get assigned a rank depending on how often they are used in dependency trees.

That reminds me of this xkcd comic. While my node-emoji package might not be essential, there are definitely some packages deep in the dependency tree that are, and they are not getting enough support!

Despite the many downloads, the amount of donations I get from those platforms is miniscule. This is a result of how those platforms work, they reward direct dependents the most, while sub-dependencies only get a fraction of the donation.

One of my most downloaded projects is node-emoji, which regularly gets over 5 million downloads a week!.(Fun fact: the sharp drop in downloads was due to yarn getting rid of emoji in the console output in their v2 release)

I am always on the lookout for new ways to support open source projects. I have already been successfully using GitHub Sponsors, and Tidelift to get a small amount of donations for my OSS projects. Recently, I've been trying out a new platform. 🧵.

For deployment I used @vercel (which I knew from Next.js), and deploying a Parcel app was surprisingly simple: I imported the GitHub repo, Vercel automatically recognized it as a Parcel app and I did not have to configure anything manually, it was deployed within seconds. 7/8.

Additionally, I am using <picture> with webp and jpg for my portrait pic, and webp and png for the book covers (jpg compression makes the text on the books look worse). With these simple changes, I already managed to achieve 100 on all Lighthouse scores (Mobile & Desktop). 6/8
