Today I got a hilarious and wonderful Christmas surprise in the mail from @MakeAugusta!. Not in a million years would I have been able to guess what was in this package when he told me something was headed my way. David does pcb event badges and design - all USA made - 100%

In many ways, the Signal Analyzer is a better tool, but there are situations where the oscilloscope is the thing you need. And an EVM <.6% is pretty darn okay!

IF you are willing to give up some of the really-nice-RF-performance from a Signal Analyzer in order to get wider bandwidths, a real time oscilloscope has become a viable option.

So you don't have to look at 0 Hz - 110 GHz, you can just work on, say, 65 GHz - 75 GHz and IGNORE the rest of the signal, cutting down 1/f noise.

The scopes can essentially bake-in a 5 GHz or 10 GHz or 30 GHz bandpass filter anywhere in it's 110 GHz range.

Traditionally you measure these signals with a Signal/Spectrum Analyzer, but bandwidth comes at a steep cost. And, you simply cannot get 110 GHz (or even 5 or 10 GHz) of bandwidth on a signal analyzer.

But, lots of modern RF tech uses very wide bandwidths (multiple GHz), historically we were looking at 10s or 100s of MHz.

So, a rule of thumb is that if you want the lowest noise, use a very small bandwidth (frequency range).

So, the wider your bandwidth, the more noise you are going to have. You'll have a "higher noise floor".

A 110 GHz scope is noisy for RF measurements, because noise is directly related to your bandwidth (the amount of spectrum you're looking at). 1/f noise, or "pink noise"
