Several teachers and librarians have contacted me, asking for permission to shoot and post videos of themselves reading my books for their students while their school is temporarily closed due to the coronavirus. The answer is YES YES YES! I love it! Please do!
Today is my annual Barnes & Noble marathon. Every year before the holidays, I spend a day going to every B&N store in NYC to sign all my books. I walk, bike, and take the subway to get around. I’ll tell you how I did at the end of the day. Wish me luck!
Well, I survived! Today I autographed 654 books at these Barnes & Noble stores. If you’re near NYC, go get em! Signed books make lovely (and cheap!) holiday gifts. Thanks to all the booksellers who were so nice to me today.
...You know what’s dangerous to young minds? Banning books and depriving kids of other points of view. If you don’t want your son or daughter to read a book, fine. But why should you have the right to decide what OTHER people’s children get to read?
I don’t usually post personal stuff, but I’ll make an exception because TODAY IS OUR 40TH ANNIVERSARY! I can’t believe Nina put up with me all these years. Yeah, we’re older and grayer, but we love each other even more now than we did on Sept. 25th, 1983. What a team we make!
A Texas school district removed Jerry Craft’s “New Kid” and “Class Act” from libraries because parents complained the books teach critical race theory.Let me add my voice to all the other authors who condemn censorship. These books are terrific, and all voices should be heard.
JOIN ME ON FACEBOOK LIVE! These are weird times Thanks to the coronavirus. So I’m going to read from my book “Miss Blake Is a Flake!” on FB Live tomorrow (Monday, March 16th) at 2pm E.S.T. Let’s huddle together for an old-fashioned read-aloud. Spread the word, not the virus!
When the pandemic began, doctors and nurses were heroes. Then, cashiers and other regular folks who risked their lives to do their jobs were heroes. Now it’s time to recognize teachers. Let’s keep them safe and honor them, every day.
A few pix from yesterday’s Barnes & Noble marathon. After visiting 7 stores and signing 654 books, I was so tired that I fell asleep twice on the subway coming home. Almost missed my stop.
All over the country, school librarians are being laid off, forced to shuttle between multiple schools, and having their budgets cut. Can we just admit that librarians are important, necessary, and the smartest people in the world? Congratulations to Emma Boettcher!
Today is my annual Barnes & Noble marathon, which I do every year just before Christmas. I will visit six B&N stores all over New York City and autograph every book of mine on the shelves. Tonight, I'll tell you how I did.
I can’t believe the greatest museum in the world (the Metropolitan Museum of Art) would lower itself to selling my book in their gift shop. But they did. Not only that, but they sold out the first batch and ordered more. I signed 85 today. If you’re in the city, go get ‘em!
Bin is an 11-year-old My Weird School fan who came all the way from Vietnam with his family to visit New York City this week. The least I could do was meet him in Central Park and give him an advance copy of the next book in the series (It comes out a week from tomorrow).
TEACHERS: Want a 25-minute break during the school day? Show the kids “My Weird Read-A-Loud.” I filmed 100 episodes. No need to scroll through months of my Facebook posts. Just go to my web site (). It’s free, and neatly organized from week 1 to week 20.
On Monday at 2pm east coast time, I’ll start ANOTHER My Weird School book. I hope you’ll come back, and tell your friends. Spread the word, not the virus!
NEXT FACEBOOK LIVE! Wednesday at 2pm E.D.T. Spread the word, not the virus! I’ll be reading the NEXT three chapters in “Miss Blake Is a Flake!” on Wednesday, and I’ll keep doing read-alouds until we BEAT this virus!
TEACHERS & LIBRARIANS: I made this 30-second video urging kids to read over the summer. I hope you’ll show it to your students. Feel free to share it with teacher/librarian friends too.
Goodbye School Library Month (April) and hello Teacher Appreciation Week (May 2-6). I speak for all children’s book authors by saying we wouldn’t be able to do what we do if not for the teachers and librarians who share our books with kids...
25 years ago TODAY “You’ve Got Mail” with Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan was released. But I don’t care about THAT. More importantly, my book “Honus & Me” appeared for 2 seconds on a shelf in Meg Ryan’s bookstore. I’m still waiting for my books to become movies, but this was a start!
PSSST! Do you want to know a secret? There’s a place where you can get all the books you want, for free! YOUR LOCAL PUBLIC LIBRARY! All you need is one of these cards. Pass it on.
MY WEIRD READ-A-LOUD! Hope to see you today on Facebook Live. I’ll be reading three more chapters of my new book “Miss Blake Is a Flake!” All you need to do is go to my Facebook fan page at 2pm east coast time. We’ll have fun! Spread the word, not the virus!
Spread the word, not the virus! If you liked our Facebook Live read-aloud yesterday, we’re going to do 3 more chapters of “Miss Blake Is a Flake!” on Wednesday (3/18) at 2pm east coast time. We’re all in this together, but we’re going to beat this virus separately...by READING!
I’m very proud and excited because my daughter Emma started her new job yesterday as Senior Grant Writer at The Tenement Museum in New York City. I tried to get a shot of her throwing her hat in the air like Mary Tyler Moore, with limited success.
BE THERE. Facebook Live. Today. 2pm E.S.T. These are weird times because of the coronavirus, so we gotta try weird stuff. I’ll be reading from my book “Miss Blake Is a Flake!” I hope it works out. After it’s over, let me know what you think. And spread the word, not the virus!
My daughter, who thinks she is a standup comedian since this morning’s tweet, now suggests there should be a Chuck E. Cheese for grownups, where they can trade the tickets they win for “adulty” things like toasters and dishes. It would be called “Charles Fromage.”
The My Weird School series doesn’t teach morals or lessons. I’m not trying to make kids smarter. All I want to do is make them laugh and get them excited about reading.
...My business is to sell books. When I hit 7 stores in one day and sign all my books, I’m making those 7 bookstores remember me. I’m also showing my publishers that I’m working hard to promote myself and sell books...
The talented illustrator Dan Santat won the Caldecott Medal in 2015 and last year he won the National Book Award for his graphic memoir “A First Time for Everything.” But did you know he also made the covers for some of my books?
TEACHERS: doing remote instruction? I know that’s hard. I can make it a little easier for you. At 2pm (EST) each weekday, give the kids a 20-minute break and let them watch “My Weird Read-A-Loud” on my Facebook fan page. I read 2 chapters a day and we finish a book each week.
How do you feel about double punctuation? For example: What?! Sometimes I write this and the proofreader will delete the exclamation point. But I say “What?!” indicates a level of surprise and disbelief that “What?” doesn’t....
Is everybody ready for chapters 7-9 in “Miss Blake Is a Flake!”? I’ll be reading them out loud Thursday (3/19) on Facebook Live at 2pm NY time. See you then! Tell your friends. We’re all in this together, but we’re going to beat this virus separately...by READING!
20 years ago, I wrote a silly story called “Miss Daisy Is Crazy!” Back then, I didn’t know it was going to become a series. But TOMORROW the 100th My Weird School book--“Miss Nichol Is In a Pickle!”--comes out. 100 books in 20 years! I gotta go lay down.
My wife is obsessed with refrigerator magnets. Wherever we travel, she spends hours searching for the perfect magnet so she’ll remember the trip. And she doesn’t even put them on the refrigerator. She sticks them on the inside of our front door (right). Do other people do this?
Instead of stuffing kids’ faces with junk food that will rot their teeth, stuff them with books that will rot their brains! Like mine! This vending machine is at Leonardo School in Leonardo NJ. Want one for your school? The web address is on the top of the machine.
Today on Facebook Live I’m going to read the big surprise ending of my new book “Miss Blake Is a Flake!” 2pm east coast time. Just go to my Facebook fan page. Be there! And tell your friends. They won’t want to miss it! Oh, and there will be a special surprise at the end.
I’m starting a new My Weird Read-A-Loud TODAY on my Facebook fan page. This week I’ll be reading...
I’m not going to tell you the name of it.
Okay, okay, I’ll tell you. But you have to tune in (2pm NY time) to find out what it is. So nah nah nah boo boo on you! Retweet!
OOOOOOOOH! Look what I got in the mail yesterday! This is my first book in TEN YEARS that is not part of a series. It comes out on March 2nd. I’ll tell you all about it between now and then.
HAPPY 2024! Believe it or not, this year marks the 20th anniversary of My Weird School, and the 100th (!) book in the series will be coming out in February. Thanks to all the parents, teachers, librarians, and especially the KIDS who made these milestones possible.
I usually publish one “big” book a year, and it comes out TOMORROW. It would mean a lot to me if you could spread the word to teachers, librarians, parents, and kids you know through word of mouth and social media. So retweet!
Hard to believe, but the 100th My Weird School book--“Miss Nichol Is In a Pickle!”--comes out TODAY. All I can say is thanks to all the kids, parents, teachers, and librarians who have made the series so successful. And of course to HarperCollins, who publish it…
READER OF THE DAY is Jaxon, this second grader from Marlboro, New Jersey. To celebrate the 100th day of school, he made a shirt with 100 of my books on it. He’s read 30 of them so far, and he’s working on the next 70. Keep reading, Jaxon!
I met a celebrity today—E Train, the children’s book podcaster. He’s visiting NY with his parents, so my wife Nina and I took them to the Met. It’s closed to the public on Wednesday, but Nina is a docent and she was able to get us in. Check out E Train at:
The winner of yesterday’s contest is...NOBODY! That’s who pointed out the mistake in my new graphic novel “Dorks In New York!” The book is available in stores now. Isn’t there SOMEBODY out there who’s going to spot the mistake and win the contest?
Remember Andrei, the boy who fled Ukraine with his My Weird School books? Well, after everything he and his family have been through, Andrei wrote a story himself and sent it to me...
For 9 months I’ve been working on a book about Houdini, and today I finished it. It doesn’t have a title yet, and it won’t be coming out until next year, but I’ll tell you all about it when we get closer to the publication date. I’ll just say one thing:kids are gonna LOVE this.
I hardly ever get a title suggestion from a reader that I haven’t already thought of, but how did I miss “Mrs. Dove Is In Love!”? If I end up writing that book, I’ll dedicate it to Alexander.
The Weather Channel says a huge "bomb cyclone" is moving across the United States right now, with freezing temperatures, a wind advisory and coastal flood warnings. If your kids know what's good for them, they'll stay indoors and read my books.
Aadhya is ten years old and lives in India. His dad emailed me, “I couldn't engage Aadhya in reading as he finds almost everything boring. The challenge was to keep him away from electronic gadgets.” Looks like Aadhya is hooked on something else now.
People have told me they don’t have Facebook, and asked if there’s ANOTHER way to watch my daily “My Weird Read-A-Loud!” So my genius web master Phyllis Hartzell did her magic over the weekend, and now you can watch the first 9 episodes on my web site ().
Today is my last school visit of the term. I’ve spent 35 days doing this. Why? It’s fun! It keeps me young. It gets me out of the house. It sells books. I get paid, and treated like a celeb. But most of all, it gives me the chance to inspire 400 kids, and have them inspire me.
TEACHERS AND LIBRARIANS: I made this Welcome Back-To-School video for kids. It’s 42 seconds long. Feel free to show it to your students, or share it with your fellow educators. And have a great school year!
Can someone explain why keyless remotes improve on car keys? They’re easy to lose. They add a level of confusion to getting into your car. And I have to replace the battery. Was turning a key a problem? Am I the only one who thinks this technology that made things HARDER?
I was at a museum yesterday with my wife when a woman came over and asked "Are you Dan Gutman?" She told me her son is a big fan and invited us to her apartment to meet him. So we did. This is Ojan. Cool kid! I love these unexpected encounters with such nice people.
HarperCollins tells me that ebooks have been booming since the crisis began, so they’ve put a bunch of mine (including 8 My Weird School books) on sale. You can get them for .99-$1.99 until May 4th wherever you buy ebooks.
I made this 54-second video urging kids to read over the summer. I hope you’ll show it to your kids. Feel free to share it with other parents, teachers, and librarians too.
READERS OF THE YEAR! My posts usually get 50-100 likes (but who’s counting?). When I posted this photo of Jaxon (left) celebrating the 100th day of school, it got 12,000 likes! And Iris (right) got over 10,000 for getting a banana split after finishing her first chapter book.
Last week I told you the 99th My Weird School book is coming out on February 6th. Well guess what? The 100th My Weird School book is coming out a week after THAT—one month from TODAY. For now, have the kids color it in!
When I visit schools, I bring along rejection letters I’ve received from publishers who didn’t like my books. I want kids to know that when you get rejected in life, it’s not the end of the world. You can still be successful. You just have to get up and try again. Never quit!
Just learned Scholastic is 100 years old. It was Scholastic that took a chance on me and published my first successful book (“The Kid Who Ran For President”).
You probably heard Eric Carle died Sunday. You may not have heard that another children’s book author—Lois Ehlert—died 2 days later. Ehlert illustrated dozens of books, most famously “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.” She was 86, and she will be missed.
Watching 273 episodes of “Cheers” and 264 episodes of “Frasier” helped my family make it through the pandemic, so I had to thank Kelsey Grammer personally today when he appeared at my local supermarket to promote his beer. And he autographed a can for my daughter!
CONTEST: At a time like this, I think we need jokes. LOTS of jokes. Go to my Facebook fan page and comment to today's post with a joke. I'll pick my fave and send that person an autographed book. And please retweet this so we can all have a few laughs in these weird times.
What a great idea! Do you have some children’s books sitting around on a bookshelf? Bring them to a local barber shop, laundramat, or other place where kids have to sit and wait for their parents to finish their boring grownup stuff. There’s a kid who’d love to read that book.
I only do virtual school visits now, but I couldn’t resist an invitation to P.S. 87 in New York City--because I could WALK there from my apartment. It was great to meet kids face to face again--like Elle. She made this visual biography of me. Cool!
The good news is that we’re starting a NEW series! It will be called My WEIRDEREST School. There will be 12 books in the new series, so you’re going to be stuck with My Weird School for three more years! I’ll be writing it until Medicare kicks in.
Congrats to my wife Nina! She’s now a docent at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Nina went through a rigorous year of training, and it was like a graduate level program in art history. I couldn’t be more proud of her. If you ever take a tour of the MET, Nina might be your docent!
If you have a copy of “Dr. Floss Is the Boss!” read along WITH me today at 2pm (NY time) on my Facebook fan page, like this kid. If you don’t have it, I’ll do the reading. We’ll finish the book on Friday, and next week’s My Weird Read-A-Loud will be “Miss Porter Is Out of Order!”
When the pandemic began, we invited our daughter Emma to move in with us. Well, tomorrow she’s moving out. Emma is finishing her Masters degree in Museum Studies at NYU, and she’s accepted a job at Old Sturbridge Village, a living history museum in Massachusetts...
Next Monday I’ll start reading “Miss Porter Is Out of Order!” live on my Facebook fan page at 2pm east coast time. If you have the book, you can read along with me.
Before the pandemic, my local library shut down for renovations. It was closed for two years and three months and finally opened again TODAY. Hooray! I always say the greatest invention in history was the free public library.
I was visiting a school in NJ when Julian asked what would be the name of the next series. I told him it would be “My Weird School Year” (lame). Julian said, “You should call it “My Weirder-est School.” I said, “You’re a genius!” We changed the title, and dedicated
#2
to Julian.
If your kids are enjoying My Weird Read-A-Loud with me, please tell your friends and relatives in other parts of the country. Spread the word, not the virus! See you on my Facebook fan page at 2pm east coast time, when we’ll read chapters 7 and 8 in “Dr. Floss Is the Boss!”
TEACHERS & LIBRARIANS: I made this 32-second video urging kids to read lots of books over the summer. I hope you’ll show it to your students. Feel free to share it with your teacher/librarian friends too.
MY WEIRD READ-A-LOUD IS NOW ON YOUTUBE! Some teachers can't show kids the videos I made this summer because their schools block Facebook. So I put all 100 episodes on YouTube. There are 20 weeks, and you can search for them by week--“Dan Gutman week 1,” and so on. Enjoy!
Sometimes we forget to say thank you. So let me give a big, upper-case THANK YOU to the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, and librarians who buy my books and share them with kids.
Today will be the LAST My Weird Read-A-Loud (tomorrow we’ll have a party). We’ve had a few laughs and a few tech screw-ups. More importantly, we read 22 books and got kids excited about reading during a time when they couldn’t be in school. Thanks to all of you who joined me.
I’m doing a special read aloud today. It won’t be a My Weird School book. It won’t be one of my other books either. It’s a story that you can’t buy in a store. It has NEVER appeared in print. Want to hear it? Go to my Facebook fan page at 2 pm east coast time.
When you have a great idea, you’ve got to write it down, right? So last night I woke up in the middle of the night and wrote this note to myself. Now I have no idea what I was thinking. Can anybody explain why I might have thought fireworks are like dinosaurs?
What do children’s book authors do in their spare time? EAT! Dinner last night with R.L. Stine, Holly Kowitt, Peter Lerangis, and Dan Yaccarino (in the mirror, taking this photo).
TO PARENTS: Has your son or daughter read all 59 My Weird School books? Send me a photo of that remarkable child so I can induct him or her into The My Weird School Reader Hall of Fame.
I’m in awe of kindergarten teachers. I can go into a K class and amuse those kids for 15 minutes by reading “Rappy The Raptor.” Even in that short period of time, some of them get squirmy. But these brave K teachers have to amuse the kids all day! How do they do it?
