Politicians' personality traits affect their attitudes towards gender equality. In a new paper @LSQjournal @corinna_kroeber and I show that the higher MPs score on the Openness trait, the more they support the representation of gender equality 📊.

Using data from a survey of elite politicians in Germany and Switzerland, the results of a causal mediation analysis show a positive direct effect of Openness that holds independent of a mediating influence of political ideology.

The first pathway proposes a direct effect (Openness ⬆️, Conscientiousness ⬇️). The second pathway runs indirectly through the effect of these personality traits on MPs' general ideological positions

We introduce the idea that the personality of MPs constitutes an important additional explanatory variable for their dedication to gender equality issues and argue that Openness and Conscientiousness shape MPs' positions toward gender equality through two different pathways:.

The paper shows that in modern-day parliaments, there are still deeply-rooted traditional attitudes towards gender equality and what roles men and women should play. This constitutes a major impediment to the achievement of gender equality.

These findings have important implications for the advancement of gender equality. If more than half of the MPs (i.e. men) are not perceived as being responsible for creating equal opportunities for women, this constitutes a major impediment to the achievement of gender equality.
