We're excited to unveil Bigscreen Beyond, our next-gen VR headset that pushes the bounds of immersion and greatly enhances comfort.
Ultra-high resolution OLED
Insanely small form factor, weighs 6X less than other headsets
Custom-built for each customer
Just a couple years ago, achieving this fidelity of facial & body mocap would cost a studio millions of dollars
Today all you need are commodity body trackers and an iPhoneX (facial)
Amazing work

I got incredibly lucky: with a rare morning with no fog in San Francisco, I was able to photograph Comet

from the Golden Gate Bridge
It peaks today at Magnitude +1 brightness and will be visible to the naked eye for the next week.

Too many people in Silicon Valley talking about how much "money" they "made" "investing" in cryptocurrencies
Pisses me off. When did "NYC finance bro" culture invade SV? What happened to creating valuable things for people?
When I announced a beta version of
@BigscreenVR
in 2015/2016, Facebook reached out. They told me to join them, because they were going to build the same thing and crush us.
I have many stories like this. I can share a long list of VR devs who have been trampled by Facebook.
Excited to announce that you can now preorder a Bigscreen Beyond for $32.23/month over 36 months
Ultra-light, ultra-high resolution OLED displays, pancake optics, and amazing games on Steam – now at an accessible price point.
I'm sharing this after working full-time on
@BigscreenVR
for >6 years. I'm so deeply passionate about VR but I'm frustrated.
Facebook/Oculus have made incredible progress with a magical VR platform!
And they're hurting devs badly. Will anyone care?
@TimSweeneyEpic
?
I love watching people try Bigscreen Beyond
Even people who've been in the VR industry for a decade & tried every VR headset – they're screaming with joy as if it's their first time in VR.
Personally, it's made me fall in love with VR again.

This is so me. Bought a book today on design and Disney Imagineering. Almost bought 10 more books at a bookstore yesterday 😂
I really don’t think people realize how small Bigscreen Beyond is
Try doing this in any other headset. You can’t. The cup will hit the 1kg brick on your face before you can have a sip of water.
Sony has sold more than 110 million PlayStation 4 consoles.
Sony's factory can manufacture a PlayStation every 30 seconds.
Only 4 humans are required to operate the factory.
Everything else is automated by 32 robots.
They refuse to negotiate Oculus App Store % Fee and refuse off-platform transactions. This gives Facebook a monopoly on video distribution in VR.
Unfortunately, no one cares. We've been asking for help for years.
Every VR dev is scared to talk about Facebook because we fear FB will hurt us more and make survival even harder.
I love VR and Oculus so much. The DK1 changed my life!
I've spent my entire adult life working on VR (21% of my life!), but I'm frustrated

Funny how all these stories are coming out now, that we all kept them to ourselves because we feared the impact that it might have on our ability to work in this field going forwards if we pissed off Facebook.
Chilling effects, anybody?
Half-Life: Alyx just cracked 500,000 copies sold on Steam.
Nearly $30 million in first week sales (caveat: Valve Index owners received a copy for free?)

1/ What people don't understand about Apple's advantage in creating a world-class AR headset (versus HoloLens or MagicLeap):
Apple is shipping the core pieces of an AR headset today to hundreds of millions of users
We spent the past 2 years listening to our users and fixing the most common complaints. It was a lot of unsexy work improving the core experience, to ensure that screens, video, and audio just worked extremely well. I'm so proud of this update. Enjoy!
BIG NEWS! We just launched "The STREAMING UPDATE"
The entire Bigscreen experience just got a major upgrade

Today is as big of a deal as the day Facebook bought Oculus. After that, we knew consumer VR would become a reality with billions of investment
And now with Apple Vision Pro, I'm certain VR/AR will go mainstream
Only a matter of time
🧵 why I'm so hyped about Apple Vision Pro:
It is financially impossible. Oculus makes money from their competitive video store, but Bigscreen's video store must pay Oculus: we lose >$1 for every $1 we make.
We asked for help, Facebook told us to find a better business model like games.
From the archive: Early prototype of the Bigscreen Beyond audio strap.
Can't wait to announce our partner on audio soon (a famous high-end audio company that many will recognize)
Just like our studio-grade mics, we built incredible speakers especially for watching movies in VR
Digital Video distributors like
@BigscreenVR
give movie studios 60-80% of each transaction.
Oculus also has movie rental features, and similarly pays movie studios a % of each transaction.
However, Facebook is forcing Bigscreen to pay 30% for every movie rental sale we make.
Ever since I got my Oculus DK1 in 2013, I've been thinking about VR every day.
We still have a long way to go, but let's take a minute to realize the incredible progress in the past few years:

Incredible
This isn't an animated videogame, this is an actual person dancing in real-time!
5 years ago. Tilt Brush launch.
I can't believe Google is shutting it down today.
Tilt Brush, Google Earth VR, etc. inspired me so much with what's possible with VR
I'm genuinely bummed about this (and annoyed. seriously Google?)
Today's launch of Apple Arcade is interesting context for Apple's behavior last year:
Apple removed Steam Link from the iOS App Store last year. Didn't want Valve streaming PC games to iOS.
A monopoly is further establishing dominance and shutting out any other marketplace
I'm so proud of what we accomplished. Quotes from
@nchan
's preview of Bigscreen Beyond after using it at home for the past couple months:
"If you have a thousand dollars right now, this is going to be a life-changing improvement."
I'm so excited to launch "Bigscreen TV" today in

👀 Just realized
@BigscreenVR
is significantly larger than Horizon Worlds & Horizon Venues combined
Bigscreen is in a unique middleground between "Social VR App" and "Utility App" and just quietly growing in our corner over here 🥳🥳
Meanwhile, Facebook has made secret deals with companies like Fandango and Netflix, and refuses to give us those same terms despite us selling the exact same product at the exact price
🧐
All payments within Oculus Store apps must use Facebook's system- and pay the 30% fee.

CEO has been calling out how this makes it hard for developers to even be profitable, nevermind compete.

I'm really proud of how we built our company. A quiet and humble team working tirelessly for years, successfully executing on big ambitions. This year, we'll celebrate our 10 year anniversary.

: today, we're launching our most-requested feature, a built-in VR videoplayer.
⏯️ The videoplayer supports 2D & 3D videos, and it's social & cross-platform: you can watch videos together with friends!
We now have several people who have spent more than 500 hours using Bigscreen Beyond in just a couple months.
Literally using VR every day, for several hours per day.
Amazing accomplishment.
My favorite part about this review?
The entire video was recorded using the Bigscreen Beyond microphone instead of studio mics.
I'm so proud of how good the Beyond mics are! For anyone who makes content or plays social VR, you know how important that is!
It's here! The
@thrilluwu
*mic drop* Bigscreen Beyond review
"Man...the comfort, clarity, and overall experience is like using a headset from the future"
This. Exactly this.
We wanted to focus deeply on comfort. Human faces/eyes far more diverse than our hands. A one-size-fits-all smartphone is fine, but not great for VR.
IPD adjustment might become a relic of 2016-2026 era VR if people love personalized VR glasses.
@isaiahheitzman
That is super interesting for me! For years I have been saying that we don’t make clothes one-size-fits-all, and we probably shouldn’t for VR headsets. Personalization is a cost, but is the comfort benefit worth it? Exciting to test!
Proud & excited to launch the
@BigscreenVR
"2019 Update"
We've been working on this for the past year! Major features:
Real-time raytracing lighting effects, new environments, a Windows Audio Driver, a new VR UI, and more!
I'm so proud of what our team has accomplished here. After several years of R&D, we've now started shipping Bigscreen Beyond to customers.
This is a monumental achievement. We're shipping units every day, and ramping up production speed further.
🎉We’ve officially started shipping Beyond to customers!
📦Shipments go out daily and are currently going to customers in the United States with international shipments beginning in mid to late Q4.
I still believe
@GoogleEarth
VR is the most incredible VR experience right now.
Every minute I spend in there is deeply impactful.
With Google Earth VR, I’m not using VR to escape the world…I’m exploring it.
