It has been a privilege serving the United States as Assistant Secretary. The caring people I’ve met, the insightful conversations I’ve had, and the countless things I’ve learned fill me with hope for the future. Thank you for supporting human rights and dignity!

Spoke with Chairman of @SaveTibetOrg Richard Gere today to underscore the U.S. Government’s serious commitment to support Tibetan human rights. The depth of the CCP’s interference in Tibetan Buddhism and culture is frightening. We support meaningful autonomy for Tibetans.

Since 1996, @viasna96 has been the voice of human rights in Belarus, working to strengthen civil society and the ability of Belarusians to have a voice in their government. We applaud their efforts and courage in the face of intense government pressure.

Alarmed by the arrest of Leanid Sudalenka, Homyel branch chief of Belarusian human rights center @viasna96, & his assistant. During the unjustified government crackdown of recent months, Viasna has identified government human rights abuses and advocated for political prisoners

PRC actions against Uyghurs and other minority groups in Xinjiang are a horrifying attempt to eradicate their centuries-old culture, crush population growth, and eliminate religious beliefs. We demand the PRC stop this genocide now, before these horrors are truly irreversible.
We call for an end to mass detentions, torture, brainwashing, forced sterilizations, and persecution of Uyghurs and members of other ethnic and religious minority groups, including ethnic Kazakhs and ethnic Kyrgyz. #Genocide #CrimesAgainstHumanity

Individuals who undermined Tanzania’s democratic process are not welcome in the United States. @SecPompeo has imposed visa restrictions to hold accountable those responsible for Tanzania’s flawed October 28, 2020 general elections.

Today's designation of six PRC and Hong Kong officials is part of our ongoing efforts to hold the PRC accountable for the mass arrests last week of over 50 politicians and activists under the draconian National Security Law. https://t.co/RRsVJwCFLR

Speaking with women Tibetan journalists, I heard their experiences reporting on Tibet and its people. Their dedication to providing vital information in often difficult circumstances is a positive example for women around the world. https://t.co/iLwEo7jWQY

Alarmed by the arrest of Belarusian journalist Andrei Aliaksandrau. Sadly, this is only the latest example of the Lukashenka regime's disdain for media freedom. We call on Belarusian authorities to release Aliaksandrau and other journalists imprisoned for their work immediately.

We support @CBP actions to prevent Chinese goods made with forced labor from coming into the USA. State-sponsored forced labor has no place in the 21st century. https://t.co/tkDIYYz93q

Removing people from homes. Forcing them to work for no pay. Living under 24/7 surveillance. Does that sound like “vocational training?” No. It's forced labor, a human rights abuse used by the CCP to control Uyghurs and members of other minority groups.

It was my great honor to speak with His Holiness @DalaiLama. I have long admired his peaceful dedication to teaching Tibetan Buddhist traditions. We reject attempts by any government to limit the freedom of religious communities to select their own leaders. #FreedomOfReligion

Dr. King’s birthday is on Friday – he would have been 92 years old. America will work with humility to live up to his words and defend the rights of all people to determine their own future.

Democracy isn’t easy, but its preservation deserves our fullest efforts. Violence cannot prevail now or ever. I’m reminded of the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who prayed we would “transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.”

I met with artisans from the Norbulingka Institute to learn about Tibetan culture. Their traditions in woodwork, painting, textiles, and more must be preserved. Grateful for the institute’s work keeping Tibetan traditions alive and helping artists. https://t.co/NINUcfC8m3

Forced labor is a human rights abuse. Kudos to @FCDOGov @tradegovuk, & @ukhomeoffice on their measures to prevent UK businesses from inadvertently supporting forced labor in Xinjiang and elsewhere in China, which the CCP uses to repress Uyghurs and others. #StandUp4HumanRights
The UK Government is gravely concerned about the situation in Xinjiang and the growing evidence of human rights abuses there. We’ve announced measures to send a message that these violations are unacceptable, & to safeguard UK businesses from any involvement or linkage with them
