Fortunately enough I got the motion signed and the eviction stopped. They turned off her electricity, so I complained with NYS DPS and ConEd because it’s illegal to shut off electricity when medical equipment in the home requires it. Capitalism doesn’t care about Moms and kids.

My client has cancer, & is about to be evicted. I’m on the phone w/ them to file a motion to stop the eviction. During the call, Con Edison appears to turn off her power. She has a child with autism & medical equipment that needs electricity. This is capitalism at its finest.

The housing courts of NYC are becoming increasingly hostile to the due process rights of tenants under the right to counsel program and now we have the highest eviction rate in 7 years. They’re doing it in the name of efficiency. This is a policy choice.

The level of houseless individuals and communities I saw in Washington heights is despicable and it’s all being accompanied by YIMBY up-zones that have occurred over the last five years. This isn’t a housing crisis, it’s housing apartheid crafted by housing for profit.
