"Good dog," he murmurs, raising his hand to pat her on the head. "Maybe you don't have a home. We can just. stay here, I suppose.". Finding a spot to sit among the leaves, he beckons her over. His head aches.

". go home. Go." He waves his free hand at the dog. "I can't take care of you. It's much too dangerous, being around me.".

". go on, you must have a home," Octavo says. "You had to have come from somewhere. Hopefully somewhere with a warm bed. " Somewhere he could follow her to. Perhaps, he thinks foolishly, whoever this dog belonged to would take pity on him and let him stay a while.

A lot of animals didn't like Octavo. Cats hissed at him, horses snorted and pinned their ears back, but dogs didn't seem to mind, most of the time. He walks in silence, holding his hand against his head. "I don't suppose you have a home," he mutters. "You look taken care-of.".

"It. it doesn't matter," Octavo continues, as if Mira had said something. "I'll just go somewhere else. I'll go to a different town. Somewhere I'll be appreciated!".

Once they've fled into the woods, Octavo gingerly touches his head where he'd been clocked with the rock. Blood trickles down his cheek. "This is just the price you pay for honing your skills," he explains to the dog. "Sometimes there are. accidents! But we must persist.".

Octavo holds his arms up as he's pelted with more rocks, the angry mob encroaching, the front of their shirts all bloodied. Shoot, he wasn't even trying for nosebleeds! Someone should have said something!. "Let's be off, pup!" He calls shakily, starting to back away.
