I spent the last few months reporting on the strangest story in sports: the surreal, high-stakes experiment of the "Sacramento" A's. It’s a story about rootedness, compromise, & the competition between cities for big-league status. Out now in the @ringer.

The A’s three-year stay in Sacramento is a potential coup for the proud underdog sports town. It’s also a mess. What’s the price of big league dreams?

#1 clearly suggests we’re talking Bay Area teams here, not just SF, so the exclusion of both the Raiders (let’s go w/ the Madden/Stabler-led 76 team) and A’s (70s or 80s take your pick) evinces either a wild blind spot or pretty gross anti-Oakland bias tbh.

“Fisher has to realize he’s a dead man walking"—@jc_bradbury. “This is the dog catching the car”—@fieldofschemes. “He’s really bad at this.”. Just a feast of quotables in the @guardian this AM on our friend John Fisher. Thank you @LengelDavid 😂 No notes.

It’s been over two years since the A’s were awarded public funding for their new ballpark. But despite last month’s “groundbreaking”, its completion is anything but certain

lol they could have had three stadiums done in Oakland by now each w/ more public funding and each less than half this price.
A’s owner John Fisher says Las Vegas ballpark cost could approach $2B. Official budget now $1.75B, up from $1.5B ⚾. Fisher family will cover $1.4B, with $350M public funds. A’s seek up to $550M from investors to offset family stake. Via @reviewjournal.

Just finished The Pacific Circuit by @KQED's Alexis Madrigal. So very good, one of the best histories of Oakland you'll read. Infuriates, illuminates, & captures Oakland's centrality to other larger infuriating stories all at same time. Elegantly synthesizes a shit ton of

Brian’s essay was so so good. Very worth your time.
Brian Burnsed (@brianburnsed) profiles golfer Sam Bennett, who became a star at the 2023 Masters while trying to overcome his father's death. The subsequent year proved not to have been as smooth as his made-for-TV Augusta narrative wanted. READ IT:

"Q & D.A." is live with Dan Moore (@DmoWriter), who wrote about this haphazard Sacramento pit stop for the A's and local fans @ringer. Full episode right now on YouTube.
