10 months ago I was in the parking lot of the veterinary cardiologist crying tears of sadness. My Boxer, Daisy, had been diagnosed w/serious heart disease at just 3 years old.
Today I cried there again, but out of joy. Defying all odds, she is CURED. Normal ♥️ size/function! 🥲
Having owned a DeLorean for 12 years, I never thought I would see another mass-produced stainless steel car again. I keep having to remind myself that this is going to be a real thing, on public roads, in one year from now.

Extremely disappointed in Xbox’s total no-show at
#TheGameAwards
. If Microsoft wants to start winning back mindshare this generation, they’ve got to show up to the year’s biggest event.
Xbox supposedly has a huge 2023 for us, so why didn’t we see ANY of it tonight?
I respect the heck out of Phil, but constructive criticism time: their messaging is almost ALWAYS reactive rather than proactive. Their brand is in a constant defensive state.
It's been this way since 2013. It makes them look weak, honestly. Sony and Nintendo aren't like this.
We're listening and we hear you. We've been planning a business update event for next week, where we look forward to sharing more details with you about our vision for the future of Xbox. Stay tuned.
LOL it's now SEPTEMBER and we don't have prices for any of the FOUR next-gen consoles launching in two months (or less, if Sony decides to sneak the PS5 out in late October ahead of the Xbox).
Someone blink, for the love of god. People need to plan their Fall gaming budgets.
Model S Plaid launch arguably felt even more intense from the backseat when I got a second test ride. I just laughed; I couldn’t help it. 😂 It’s just too much fun.
@elonmusk
@Tesla
So basically, Sony's exclusivity deals on Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo were them f*cking around.
Microsoft buying Bethesda – thus making sure Sony couldn't do it again with Starfield, Elder Scrolls, or anything else Zenimax has – was Sony finding out.
Been up since 3:30am after Daisy woke up coughing w/labored breathing. Took her to emergency vet & a chest X-Ray shows a very large heart w/fluid in her lungs. Heart failure. She’s getting more tests now.
Any good karma/vibes you can spare, I could use ‘em now. A better moment:
I massively regret the $597 (including tax) that I spent on the PSVR2.
I love great VR game experiences & I was so excited that Sony was doubling down w/a truly powerful second-gen headset, but they burned me. There are no games. It already feels dead. Look at the layer of dust!
Holy crap they actually DID have the guts to delay Halo Infinite! They'll take a LOT of crap for delaying Halo Infinite, but in the end it's the right move. They cannot afford another potential Halo 5-like debacle. So I say, good on 343 here:
Please, please spare me all of your "Exclusives are bad for the industry" takes, Xbox fans. I'm commenting on what I see. FF16 is a huge get for Sony. It's a business.
If Xbox had trotted out anything remotely this big as exclusive you'd be celebrating it LOUDLY.
Good. Give Vince control over more things at EA and stay the hell out of his way. His track record (Medal of Honor 1, CoD 1, 2, MW, MW2, Titanfall 1 & 2, Apex Legends, Jedi Fallen Order) suggests he should be overseeing as much non-sports stuff as possible at EA.
Next-gen
@Tesla
Roadster:
0-60 in 1.9 seconds.
0-100mph in 4.2 seconds.
200kWh battery that goes 620 highway miles.
I say this in the absolute most complimentary way possible:
@elonmusk
is a crazy motherf'er.
WOW. 😎😂🤣❤️
No Elder Scrolls 6 on PS5. As expected!
But guess what? If the tables were turned, Sony would do the EXACT same thing. In fact, everyone would EXPECT them to and there wouldn't even be any question about it.
Just canceled Disney+ after finding out that the price is being jacked up from $80 per year to $140 per year at my renewal in November.
Quite honestly, almost doubling the price isn't worth it for me. Aside from the occasional Star Wars show, I don't really watch much Disney+ 🤷♂️
The last thing I need at the start of a crazy-busy week like this are distractions. You know, cool things I can’t help but stop what I’m doing and start playing w...
Fable looked so good yesterday at the
#XboxShowcase
that I’m seeing a ton of people saying, “I wish they’d shown gameplay.”
That WAS gameplay.
We are starting to find out what insane non-car stuff ForzaTech is capable of in
@WeArePlayground
’s brilliant hands. 👀
Not only is MachineGames's entire history & expertise in making 1st-person games, but if they had made Indiana Jones entirely in 3rd-person, the discourse would be absolutely TOXIC today with Sony fanboys downvoting & comment-bombing the trailer, calling it an Uncharted clone.
The Xbox 360 glory days were long enough ago now that there's an entire generation of gamers who weren't even alive for/were too young for it. It's never been cool to them like it was to us.
If you're Microsoft that's a really big problem to overcome. Only A+ games can fix it.
I was wrong to drink the "current-gen won't hold next-gen back" Kool-Aid. I've talked to enough people now. It might make sense for some games, but not AAA, system-seller kinds of big-budget productions.
Cut bait on the old hardware. I wanna see what the new stuff can do.
Good god my mentions are absolutely TOXIC this morning after posting two Series X game previews that <checks notes> *don't even mention PS5 in the slightest.*
Guess I'm going to have to start making more liberal use of the "Mute this conversation" button when sharing my work. 🙄
In 21 years, no Xbox game has ever meant more to me than this one.
There have been amazing games & big cultural moments in Xbox’s history, but if you ask me it’s never been better than this right here. This is the pinnacle of Xbox so far. Wish I could go back & relive this era.
Halo Infinite
Perfect Dark
Fable
Starfield
Elder Scrolls 6
Avowed
Hellblade 2
Everwild
Forza Motorsport
Gears 6
State of Decay 3
Flight Sim Xbox
etc.
While almost none are coming out anytime soon (sigh...), Xbox's AAA first-party drought looks like it might FINALLY end this gen.
Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen returns to my
@Tesla
podcast, Ride the Lightning, for an hour-long interview this Sunday at 9am ET/6am PT. We talked a LOT about Cybertruck, plus next-gen Roadster (!), the new steering wheel option on Model S & X, and more!
Credit to Xbox — I called them out last year for not showing up to this major industry event, and this year they SHOWED UP.
Xbox won 3
#TheGameAwards
and had 2 kickass reveals plus an excellent gameplay trailer for Hellblade 2.
Keep this momentum going,
@XboxP3
and team!
People left Xbox in droves last gen because Microsoft couldn’t consistently get either a quantity or quality of exclusive games onto their platform.
Their strategy now that they’re finally getting those exclusives is to…stop making them exclusive? 🤷♂️
You are not ready for Light No Fire from
@NoMansSky
. I met w/Sean & the team this morning & it’s like an inside-out No Man’s Sky. It’s one giant 1:1 scale planet in which you can experience life & adventure ANYWHERE with your friends. 👀 Sean is insane to do this.
#TheGameAwards
F the Naughty Dog leaker. It's such a kick in the dick to not only players who will/might/already had it spoiled for them, but to your coworkers who've worked so hard with you. Maybe management DOES deserve a middle finger, but why shank the people you bled with on this project?
So where was I last week?
At 343, playing
@Halo
Infinite! And I'm going to tell you about it all month long through
#IGNFirst
.
Yes, I played the campaign. A lot of it. But we kick off the month of coverage with a reveal of a new MP map: 'Streets'. Enjoy!
Finished Spider-Man: Miles Morales over the weekend & enjoyed the heck out of it. Great writing, great message, & it was just FUN. I love this Spidey universe and can't wait to see where it's going. Bravo
@insomniacgames
. P.S. Whatever artists/animators created *this*, YOU ROCK!
I see a clip of Unlocked with me talking about the Series X launch lineup is going around in various fanboy circles.
Allow me to own what I said: yes, I think the launch lineup is weak. Great variety, sure, but no must-play games.
Xbox, 360, & XB1 all had better launch lineups.
The Xbox 360 had so many great exclusive blockbuster games that LITERAL WIDESPREAD SYSTEM MELTDOWNS – the Red Ring of Death – didn't slow down console sales or people's love for the Xbox 360, even when they had to go through 3, 4, or 5 systems because of it.
Think about that.
Tomorrow at 9am PT/12pm ET on
@IGN
it will finally be time for
@HavokRose
's 11-minute, 30-second hands-on video preview of Halo Infinite's campaign. I hope you'll watch – or read the longer, 3000+ word text version. Better yet, do both! 😁
No story spoilers in either one, FYI.
Every major platform has gotten (or is about to get) an absolute monster RPG this year:
Switch: Zelda TotK
Xbox: Starfield
PS5: FF16
PC: Diablo 4, Baldur's Gate 3
2023 has been an awesome year for all genres, but has 2023 blessed RPG gamers the most so far? 🤔
Discuss.
If you're curious about upcoming video games with lightsabers in them, then tomorrow is going to be a good day for you, and the start of a very good month.
Hey let's talk about something more positive:
Indiana Jones looked DOPE. You could see a LOT of the studio's Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay DNA in there.
Troy Baker does a heck of a Harrison Ford, and kudos to Bethesda for spending the $ to license Ford's likeness.
Xbox fans are DYING to celebrate a masterpiece-level exclusive like God of War. Thing is, though, it took Sony 10 years to get to this point where their 1st party is firing on all cylinders. This work started in PS3 era. Xbox can/might get there but it's going to take a long time
I woke up still frustrated about Xbox's "presence" at
#TheGameAwards
last night. So I wrote an opinion piece about it on my flight home from LA this morning.
Here's why I think Microsoft's Game Awards no-show was a slap in the face to Xbox players:
Microsoft sent me an Xbox Series X and a Series S!*
(*They're dummy units for display only, so I photographed them next to a bunch of other consoles. Take a look at the image gallery at the link! You'll see a couple of really neat touches on each system.)
So
@elonmusk
is already the real-life Tony Stark. Am I the only one who thinks he could TOTALLY be the real-life John Hammond if he wanted to as well? Would anyone be shocked if Elon announced he brought back the dinosaurs and was opening his own Jurassic Park?
#LifeFindsAWay
If Sony's "woe is me" lobbying campaign is actually successful – all over one game! – I could see Microsoft ultimately making things much worse for Sony by going at them on their home turf: buying Square Enix, Capcom, Atlus, etc. 1/x
If Larian can't get Baldur's Gate 3 running well in split-screen on the Series S, it's time for Microsoft to start bending the rules on S/X parity. If you're Microsoft you need to get BG3 on your platform ASAP.
We talked about this in more detail on the brand-new Unlocked.
The Xbox Developer Direct was fantastic, but doing a digital-only release of one of your major first-party games is NOT OK.
Hellblade 2 deserves a physical release.
Bottom line: In their 2 events this summer, Sony did a great job of selling the PS5. They showed lots of timed/console exclusives & their big first-party lineup.
Xbox, in their 2 events, didn't do a great job of selling their *next-gen* proposition. But they sold Game Pass well.
This is officially the dumbest, most drawn-out tease for a game I've ever seen. First there was the thing in Sept.(!). Now it's "GO TO ALL OF OUR SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS TO PIECE TOGETHER A LOGO!"
We get it, it's Batman: Court of Owls. Just announce it.
I'm still thinking a lot about this. I'm going to write a column about it for IGN this week.
Redfall may only be "just one game," but it is the final straw for a lot of people, I think.
The Xbox 360 glory days were long enough ago now that there's an entire generation of gamers who weren't even alive for/were too young for it. It's never been cool to them like it was to us.
If you're Microsoft that's a really big problem to overcome. Only A+ games can fix it.
Very excited about 2 things I've got for you on IGN tomorrow:
-The Todd Howard interview in celebration of Skyrim's 10th anniversary this week (yes, he talks a bit about Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 too).
-Our first *small* Halo Infinite campaign piece from our trip to 343i.
If I have it right from that
#PS5Reveal
:
-10.28 TFLOPS (vs. 12.155 on Xbox)
-825GB SSD (vs. 1TB on Xbox)
-3.5GHz max CPU clock (vs. 3.8GHz on Xbox)
-Same 16gb GDDR6 RAM as Xbox
-Major focus on audio
-Back compat is there but not as 100% as Xbox
So probably cheaper than Xbox?
I’m thrilled to announce my very special guest for episode 220 of my weekly
@Tesla
podcast, Ride the Lightning: Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen! We talk about the design of S, 3, X, Y, R, and yes, Semi too! And more! The show drops this Sunday @ 9am ET/6am PT!
Here it is: my (spoiler-free) review of
@Halo
Infinite's single-player campaign! In short, it is exactly what the series needed: it brings out the best in Halo's combat sandbox by blending the best of Halo 1 & 3 to create memorable new moments. Read/watch:
Daisy didn't cough at all last night.
Her breathing sounds good (no wheezing) this morning.
Her appetite (including for the new food I'm starting to mix in) is strong.
Her stool looks good so far (a concern given the new battery of meds she's on).
So far so good. Onward & upward
Good news update on Daisy after she just had her chest X-rayed again: her heart looks “significantly” better...for now. Lungs clear of fluid, heart smaller. She will be rechecked in another 6-8 weeks and if she looks good then, then we’ll know it’s real. But so far so good!!
@RCardosoEU
Respectfully, sir, I'm not sure it gets any clearer than the Head of Xbox's public statement on this matter from less than 2 weeks ago. It'll still be on "your" PlayStation, don't worry.
Xbox chief Phil Spencer on Call of Duty on PlayStation:
"as long as there is a PlayStation out there to ship to, our intent is that we continue to ship Call of Duty on PlayStation”
It's astounding how many memorable, fun exclusives the original Xbox had in just *4* years:
Halo 1, 2
Splinter Cell 1, PT, CT
Ninja Gaiden
KOTOR
Jade Empire
PGR
Breakdown
Riddick
Fable 1
Morrowind
JSRF
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Steel Battalion
MechAssault
Otogi 1,2
Hell of a 4-yr run!
The Bethesda Era begins at Xbox with some good news for gamers: Doom Eternal coming soon to Xbox Game Pass!
This is a legit GOTY nominee (in my book, anyway). PLAY IT on Game Pass if you have not done so already! 😎👍
Six years ago today I officially started at
@IGN
. Thanks to all of you for making me feel welcome in the online world after almost 10 years spent in magazines. ❤️
I know I'm getting ahead of myself and I don't want to sound dramatic, but has there *ever* been as much riding on a showing of a game for Microsoft than the July reveal for Halo Infinite?
-5 year wait
-long silence
-next-gen
-launch title
-face of the "new" Xbox 1st party
Just got off the phone with The Toddfather himself, Todd Howard, talking Starfield. I had follow-up questions after yesterday's reveal, and he had ANSWERS. To hear it first, join us live on Unlocked tomorrow, right after the Xbox Extended Showcase.
You won't want to miss this.
Even with Spider-Man 2 lifting the mood at the end, that
#PlayStationShowcase
was not Sony's best showing. Looking at this list, lots of CG trailers and smaller games trying to pass off as bigger ones. Smaller games are great of course, but these major showcases demand big swings
Activision-Blizzard is FINALLY part of Xbox. It is done.
Now comes the real work for Phil & the team: weeding out the toxicity at all levels of the company, from the C-suite on down.
That, to me, is the biggest good that MUST come out of this.
