Prioritizing that families have enough to eat is just as important as providing healthy food options.

The bill includes a number of proposals that would be harmful on their own. Together, they would be absolutely devastating, especially for families who rely on both SNAP and food pantries to survive.

Cuts are coming. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which helps 260,000 Iowans put food on the table, is under attack right now in Washington DC. Today and tomorrow, the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture will be voting on $290+ billion in cuts to SNAP.

This summer will be a difficult time for Iowans with kids in the household if resources are tight. This new program is a step forward, but many questions remain unanswered about how it will work. We need to prevent additional strain on those in need and feeding organizations.

Here in Iowa, we are facing nearly a 17-year low in SNAP enrollment while food banks and food pantries across the state are breaking records every month. Something just doesn’t add up.
