Ireland's pub scene is facing a crisis. Since 2005, over 2,100 pubs have closed, with Tipperary seeing a 32% decline. As costs rise, family-run pubs are at risk. We're calling on the government to cut alcohol excise by 10% to save these community hubs. #EasyontheExcise #SYL25

Irish beer drinkers pay 11x more excise on a pint than Germans. This 55c tax puts immense pressure on our pubs, with over 100 closing annually. DIGI is calling for a 10% excise reduction to help our pubs survive and remain the heart of our communities. #SYL25 #EasyOnTheExcise

Irish consumers pay a staggering 80 times more excise duty on a glass of wine than people in France (80c vs 1c). This high tax burden makes Ireland's wine excise the highest in the EU and puts our hospitality sector at a huge disadvantage. #EasyontheExcise #SYL25

An average of 112 pubs stopped trading every year between 2005 & 2024. Without immediate intervention, up to 1,000 more pubs will close over the next decade, leaving their communities without a vital community and tourism hub. #EasyontheExcise #SYL25

An average of 112 pubs stopped trading every year between 2005 and 2024 – with average annual closures of 128 between 2019 and 2024. The high cost of doing business was a major contributory factor to the alarming rate of closures recorded by the report https://t.co/XVGp4KT9X4

Given that we now consume alcohol at average European levels it makes sense that we should pay excise at average European levels. DIGI will be seeking a 10% cut in excise in this year’s Budget to give struggling rural pubs and restaurants a fighting chance of survival.
