One year later on June 19,1866 many of those who were enslaved in Galveston began to hold celebrations commemorating June 19 - Juneteenth, the day they learned of their freedom. Today, we hope that you take the time to remember and reflect on how precious Freedom is for all.

On June 19, 1865 Union soldiers told the enslaved in Galveston that the Civil War was over and they were now free. Those enslaved in Galveston were the last to hear the news about the end of the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln's signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.
