Studio/Co-Creative Director @ Arkane Lyon | Blade, DEATHLOOP, Dishonored, Gray Matter | Capoeira teacher, supernatural dad, into building operas made of bridges
This might be the funniest game design candy I've seen in a AAA video game in a long time. The display of ingenuity to commit to the bit making the item special by effortlessly breaking "proper UX" rules coupled with the earnest explanation to bring the player along is brilliant!
It’s time to admit that Remote Work doesn’t work. WFH Friday is a 4 day work week. Full WFH is a 2 day work week. Every interaction has to be scheduled, which means a lot of information-sharing doesn’t happen. Remote is a great lifestyle, not a way to build a great company.
My team and I have been living in sheer terror of a leak until announce. When rumors started circulating I had my first physical symptoms of stress in decades and legit had nightmares every night. This type of thing hurts, and Insomniacs deserve our decency care and support RN 💙
Last thing I'll say:
Games are made by PEOPLE.
People that CARE about how their work, the fruit of their gut and sweat and sacrifices get in front of the eyes of those they are making it for: the players.
We are NOT PR firms, we are NOT our companies.
We CARE about our games.
Thank you so much for watching our announcement!
"Let's do a single player immersive sim hybrid with all the shit we love!"
"Ok, and let's make it a Blade game, in 3rd person, in our own crazy version of Paris!"
And somehow this fever dream fucking happens?! This is surreal.
I hope that the good reviews we are getting will encourage other AAA studios to take creative risks. Let's see this praise as a celebration not of Arkane but of the medium and the rich experiences that we can create with all the work and money. "The bullet is the same, but..."
Yeah, I'm surprised by how quickly this is escalating. I'll try to organize my own hot take-ish thoughts in a thread, separating concept, execution, and dev. First: it's not a Pokemon-like game. Digimon is. And even if it was, so what? (cries in FPS, BRs, Souls, hero shooters...)
Hahah. I have actually lost followers over Palworld discourse.
People are losing their minds over this game and getting SO angry and I'm just... confused.
For anyone discovering "DEATHLOOP" for the first time today, here is a🧵 of tips! Very light mechanical spoilers probably.
First: just like your man Colt, it's normal to be confused in the beginning. Enjoy the journey of discovery, you'll be a master of the ♾ in no time! 1/13
Some people mentioned it in the comments and out of modesty I hesitated to say but yes, we have some open positions in Lyon including some that aren't yet on the website. If you have been hit by the recent layoffs, my DMs are open and I'll make sure you are on top of the pile.
To celebrate
#Dishonored10
, here is a little thread of game design scribbles. For context: I do take my notes in PPT which people find quirky/time consuming compared to writing but I find it very efficient in terms of how fast you convey the idea to team members/future you :)
As a game designer, I'm baffled that some say this is lazy. Even if you copy an idea from another game you can just copy/paste it. Even doing a sequel to your own game with the same programmer in a new engine, it takes crazy amount of time to develop a viable V2.0 of a mechanic.
@JokingDev
Never autosaving when you aren't sure that the player is "safe". We do a lot of efforts code wise to ensure this rarely happens to not ruin your saves. And in this case you have only 2 saves (autosave and last inn sleep) so it's even more dramatic a move.
Signature Arkane artistry meets everyone's favorite Daywalker! 🔥
And yes, as we expand our team’s skillsets and perspectives, please consider joining us to work together and do justice to Blade, a hero who clearly means so much to us and innumerable other fans.

Your excitement following Marvel's Blade reveal means the world to us. Here's some exclusive eye candy from our Art heroes at Lyon! ❤️
Want to team-up? Check out Arkane Lyon's open positions as we're looking for talents in various disciplines:
Everyone: we want more high quality mid-sized games by AAA studios!
Also Everyone: no, I didn't buy Prince of Persia the Lost Crown yet, why do you ask?
(This clickbait is in fact a pretext to recommend PoP, not to make a statement, but because it's AMAZINGLY well done! 🧡🖤)
I stuttered too much to have the time to say this for every dev in this industry: wherever you come from, no matter whether you look like
@mitmitman
or
@DanaENight
or like me, YOU BELONG here. Fuck anyone who makes you feel otherwise. They will fade away, we will outlast them. ❤️
So we received this beautiful thing at the office for the gaming room, and now Arkanites are asking on slack where the cameras are and when the security guard is making his rounds. Should I be worried?

I’d say some games (for me in recent years: Elden Ring, BOTW, Nier Automata, RDR2) do make you feel like they are in another league entirely as you can’t fit them in your mind and break them down as creations/projects *immediately* 1/8
Unpopular take probably, but considering Tears of the Kingdom took more than 6 years to make and Outer Wilds took 7 years to evolve from concept to shipping I'd say that sometimes it's good to let studios, big or small, cook to create great games.
What this game is: a survival game outwardly (from the Dev's mouth) inspired by Ark and Rust. It's main hook is how much it imitates, references, parodies and (efficiently) blends designs & concepts from successful games: Pokemon, BOTW, Elden Ring, Minecraft, Fortnite at minimum.
As a capoeira teacher, it's very pleasing to see so many folks getting joy out of kicking people. How kick got into the game is a fun bit of game dev trivia:

Hi
@XboxP3
, really hope you're enjoying your time...loop on Blackreef, but also hope that you'll leave your invasions open...
For no particular reasons...😇😈
From the bottom of all our hearts at Arkane Lyon past and present: thank you for playing DEATHLOOP in the past, present and future, thank you from making it a success, thank you for your passionate feedback and thank you for the emotions leading up to launch. What a crazy ride 🥲
5 Million Players!
Thank you for joining us on this adventure to Blackreef. We hope you enjoyed your stay. 😁
To celebrate, we’ve gathered some statistics on how you’ve spent your time on the island.
TL;DR of the last 7 days.
Thank you so much, seriously, your collective enthusiasm and trust is the best way you can contribute to help us making Marvel's Blade, indeed, 🔥.
I saw a few questions/reactions, and yes it's possible I've seen it multiple times around me, but I'll be transparent: yes mine is... Chaotic (Good) :
1) I dropped our of school at 18, focused on capoeira and small jobs (falafel vendor, modelling, extra actor, telemarketing...)

NEWS: Embracer Group has canceled a Deus Ex video game that was in development for ~2 years and laid off an unspecified number of staff at Eidos Montreal:
Sure the iconoclast, cruel humor here isn't for everyone. But were we as harsh with Cult of the Lamb? Wasn't Slime Rancher self aware? Isn't that what we expect from art/entertainment to take risks not be toothless vanilla propositions that respect our comfort zones all the time?
We're going to stay silent for a while so before they put
@mitmitman
and I back in the box, let me just say this is an absolute blast to work on, hats off to the team, you are really fucking killing it.
I've never been so excited for a project and I'm not crying you're crying!
Use of AI, I'm a bit iffy but will try this "AS OF NOW" good faith argument. Has anyone proof that generative AI has been used for this game? If it is suspicions based on *opinions* of this indie studio's creator, I think I'm even more ill at ease by the discourse around here.
Doom is literally the first game I played on my first PC. It was formative on my perception of what action games can be. The memories of my fights in its hell will haunt me for the rest of my life. There is a reason this is one of the only bits of decoration on my walls.
#doom30
I'll pause here to point out how earily it blends all these together. Artistically, spacialy AND mechanically it sometimes feel like you are in a chimeric fever dream logic where glimpses of games you spend too much time in appear in flashes of dejà vu, and never disappear.
This studio DID a game using AI and were earnes about it. Why should we assume they are hiding it for Palworld? Suspicion is legit but, I'm ill at ease with it thrown around as fact, it's misinformation, ironically a thing we all fear AI will cause...
I'll say this, the game itself aside, these reviews are an amazing collection of diverse, stylish writing. Reading them back to back is an absolute blast. I'm admirative.
Gamewise, a shocking thing is no one is talking about is compared to Ark, Valheim etc. how approachable it is. Anecdata: for 2 of the friends, I'm playing with it's their very first survival game and one is VERY casual, but in a couple of hours we were all having a lot of fun.
Preparation for the Blade announcement was pretty intense, a bit meta, and
@BillRosemann
and I got to meet our cardbox universe variants. They were kind of jerks tho.
... it plays well together, the specifics of the 3C, feedback, balancing etc. makes it that taking two things and smashing them together *in a way that works* AND is approachable to mainstream players is not an easy feat. If only for that I take offence in "lazy" being thrown out
Yikes (French politics edition).
Well, after sad video game news and exasperating discourse that ensued, it makes for a shitty conclusion to the day.
I like human beings a lot (sue me), but the empathy deficit at all levels of our society is challenging these days.
Be kind.
Now the Pokemon with Guns. Did this game pretend it was anything else than a parody of Pokemon? It even has an angle with it "here is the blind spot of your children fantasy" and it commits to the bit in mechanics, narrative, art, etc. it's well made if you approach it candidly.
This month, Dishonored turns 10!
Join us in celebrating by sharing your memories throughout the month. Plus, keep an eye out for some special giveaways!

Bonjour, Dinga from Arkane! I can’t believe I get to make crazy games with wonderful people for a living, and this is
#WhatAGameDevLooksLike
when not teaching capoeira (generally more sweaty) or with one of his amazing daughters (generally too amazed to think of taking a selfie).
And this new element (mechanic, art concept etc.) now has to work together with a ton of other new things. Catching a creature to use it in combat exists in pokemon (and SMT, and Xenoblade C...), base building exists in Ark (and Fallout4 and Fortnite STW...) but making sure...
Not a tip but if you have made it here: we all at Arkane Lyon hope that you will enjoy this unique game for what it is. Have fun, scratch your heads, celebrate victories, rage about high cost mistakes, create memorable moments, and when ready: Break this *#%$ing Loop! 13/13
I start with this cause it's one thing to have a "lol dis for real?" pitch, it's another put in the work like they did both in sheer variety of elements/concepts and in the execution at this scope/quality ratio for an EA launch from a japanese indie studio.
There is more than one way to crack an egg, and what matters is that the omelette is well loved. Let’s try to be open to other ways to cook omelettes, the cooking industry will be richer for it. That is all I’ll share on the topic. The topic of omelettes.
Finished Alan Wake II yesterday, it was a fantastic game. And I am one who usually does not play horror games. The last mind place sequence is my best gaming moment of the year. Congratulations on a brave and masterful piece of art

Art design. I'm not a jurist but, as someone said "cute monster parodying pokemon" has a range, and in terms of direction why *should* you make it very different from the material you are parodying? Should Spaceballs design be more different from movies it parodies? SFA's Dan?
A former boss among other things promised my job to my intern saying: "he's too ambitious, he'll never manage anything" Few years later I say hi to him at Gamescom, he sees "Bethesda" on the badge 🤯 5 second brain freeze. He stutters. I say I'm at Arkane 🤯 another 5 seconds. 😏

And whether or not Palworld is your jam, remember that in the end it's all about what entertains YOU. There isn't a shortage of options to play, don't feel like you need to shotgun any game that is successful and doesn't appeal to you personally. Let others enjoy theirs, and...
Now if tomorrow it's proven, it's a different debate don't get me wrong and you'll see me silently disagreeing from the sidelines. I hear it's too much to ask from Twitter to be reasonable, but this place is the sum of every one of us and we should never stop to encourage reason.
Not a stab at other games at all, but in times when action games get more RPG-ey and RPGs get more action-ey, BG3 reminds (teaches?) us what RPG mechanics can be when used for their intrinsic value/meaning rather than as a mean to other ends, like stickiness, balancing etc.
Arkane Studios Lyon (Deathloop, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, Dishonored 2) is hiring for its next Xbox project. The studio currently has 20 open positions.
Dear past Dinga. It’s you from the future. On your 42nd birthday, you’ll get a congratulations gift from
@PlayStation
for a game you contributed to. When that happens, try to play it cool. Good luck with that. And yes, you can still do backflips at that age.
(Thank you!!! 🧡🖤)
Part of me agrees, part of me disagrees, and both parts recommend playing this wonderful game, and none of these part is a mimic. Happy 5th anniversary Prey! Time for a replay 😊
Giuseppe from the gameplay programing team made a 20mn montage of Blade reaction videos. This is pure dopamine and love y'all, I know a lot of us will be watching it very regularly!
Forza Horizon 5 is one of my favorite games this year, lots of pleasure, action, and flow. It joins the Forgotten City, Scarlet Nexus, Gardians of the Galaxy, RE: Village and "DEATHLOOP" (sorry, I genuinely had too much fun playing it before and after release to not list it😊).
Ok then! First off, I'm not a scholar or an authority in the matter, so these are just random thoughts from someone that is lucky enough to have experience working on games that stem from this design philosophy with some of the bravest minds in the field.
All this immersive sims discussions happening thanks to TotK are really tantalizing me to make a long thread. Someone please stop me so I don't use my bank holiday day working on that...

And the fact that the creators are interested in AI... Well a lot of publishers/groups also expressed interest (acts natural) and we are not scrutinizing all of their announces/releases accusing them... Are we allowing ourselves this because it's a japanese indie studio?
Seemingly small things that we added to the Golden Loop update that might fly under the radar but I'm happy about:
* Gyro aiming
* Fine tuning for the aiming (accel, smoothing, deadzones..)
* New trinkets and weapon perks
* Revised difficulty settings for accessibility
...
Just finished Pentiment and I loved it, thanks
@jesawyer
and team! Wow this end of the year was really good for me completing back to back God of War Ragnarok, Midnight Suns and now this! Any advise for a short game I have time to finish in 2022 that could keep that streak going?
It isn't my nindo, but after experimenting with MP in "DEATHLOOP" I feel there is indeed some potential there. I wouldn't call it an evolutionary step, more like a viable hybridation. The key being making MP systems diegetic enough to create a believable shared narrative/world.
Arkham games make me "be" Batman, but I believe that Dis and Dis2 's nonlethal paths are best expression of one of his themes in video game form: not taking lives of bad people, even the ones who wronged you, despite having the privilege, power, and *choice* to do so.
#BatmanDay
@TafferKing451
And on the other side of the coin, I find interesting that some are "pinching their noses" to get into this game due to its popularity and try to pretend it succeeds *despite* its studio's history and philosophy instead of *because* of it. What we need, are more eyes.
A dev roadmap isn't a "MKTG plan" it's a representation of our goals as creators artists engineers Producers QA.
Leaks impact us, force us to change plans, discard ideas, create assets for new beats or to answer concerns that shouldn't exist.
It impacts our health, our jobs.
How time loops... 🥲
2 years and I still cannot express how proud and happy I am, and actually we all are at the studio, of that very unique game we've made against all odds.
However, sorry to announce that we have no new "DEATHLOOP" trailer planned for today's State of Play 😇
I wasn't expecting to write this, but Palworld is an absolute blast to play. It was unironically one of my most wanted this year out of sheer curiosity for its weirdness but it had no wrote being that good. What the absolute hell.
There is also something to be said about characters from games *even without an outward parody intention* being very similar. None of us should throw the first stone here, and again it's beside the point since it's on the nose/earnest referencing/parody.
Amazing how I know practically nothing about the showcase today, so I'm SUPER excited to see what
#XboxBethesda
colleagues and partners from all around the world have been up to. The industry's creativity and artistry was flowing strong these last days, and the party goes on! 🤩
It works for me. Maybe it's cultural and my being french/atuned to japanese humor, but as someone who always found mechanics about collecting living beings to "use" them in gameplay very creepy even in big popular games, seeing it turned it to 11 in a well made game cracks me up.
I went to E3 only twice in my career (!!!) Each time it was pretty memorable, I was in a kind of dream/stress state. Feels like I never got the opportunity to actually enjoy it and soak it in that it's already gone. It will for me remain the dream that I only barely touched.
