Argumentation has always been a process of reason and discussion. We use 'argument' like a high-school break up, but it's always primarily been about getting to the truth of a given matter. All those presuppositions follow—you can dismiss it, and enter the 'Law of the Jungle.'.
@venusdeotis @MonarchoHoppean Right. Let’s grant MonHoppe that “real” arguing involves this ethical commitment. Then we just say that a lot of what most people are doing isn’t real argument. Presto, no performative contradiction. You can’t make a substantive philosophical point simply by definitional fiat.
