One thick snake. This is the Tsuchinoko, a wide snake that appears in the folklore of Western Japan. Not only is it venomous, but it has the ability to jump. It shows up in multiple Japanese media, including Castlevania, Yo-kai Watch, and the Metal Gear Solid series.

In 1978, a man known only as Mr. Matsubara claimed to have photographed a creature in Lake Ikeda. In 1991, another visitor shot footage of the lake monster. Dubbed Issie, the creature’s origins can be traced all the way back to Japanese Mythology.

The Japanese Bigfoot, Hibagon was first seen in the 1970s, around Mount Hiba in the Hiroshima Prefecture. It was described as 5ft tall, black furred with white skin, and in one 1972 report, having a chocolate-brown face.

The Ryukyu Kingfisher, a 9 1/2 inch bird, lived in Japan’s Miyako Island, but only one specimen was ever collected back in 1887. It’s believed the bird went extinct due to rats. However, some have reported seeing the bird and believe it is still alive

Throughout the 1970s, people around Lake Kussharo, Japan reported seeing a large, horse-like creature with silver eyes called Kussie. On several occasions, groups of people have seen the monster, such as in 1973, when 40 school kids & their teachers saw it.

The Crested Shelduck was last seen in 1964, around the Sea of Japan, though reports were collected in 1985 & 1991. Though it is listed as critically endangered, some have presumed it extinct. It’s only known from specimens collected from the early 1900s.
