5/8 Retailers want certainty. Processors need margins. But growers need viability. If returns don’t improve, we risk greater uncertainty. But, government has the tools: public procurement, strategic grain reserves and clearer support for quality domestic supply. Time to use them.

1/8 Only about 8–10% of the shelf price of bread comes from the cost of wheat itself. The rest is made up of energy, transport, labour, packaging and processing. So even if wheat prices fall sharply, bread prices may only dip slightly, or not at all, if other costs are rising.
