7/8 Better import data to prevent the saturation of the grain market through over purchasing and a regulatory landscape that supports on farm productivity improvements that help boost profitability on farm.

6/8 The solutions: Fairer returns for producers, established through fairer dealings within the supply chain; market transparency to prioritise the sourcing of British product through an industry owned Digital Passport;.

5/8 Retailers want certainty. Processors need margins. But growers need viability. If returns don’t improve, we risk greater uncertainty. But, government has the tools: public procurement, strategic grain reserves and clearer support for quality domestic supply. Time to use them.

4/8 A strong pound also makes UK imports cheaper, further reducing domestic cereal prices. This is one reason UK milling wheat premiums (the bonus for high quality) have collapsed from £79/t in 2023 to around £13–£33/t in 2025.

3/8 When global production rises, competition intensifies, pushing prices down across export markets. This affects UK cereals pricing by lowering import costs and putting pressure on domestic prices to stay competitive.

2/8 UK wheat prices are only impacted in a limited way by the outcome of the national harvest, good or bad. For British farmers, the value they receive for their grain is based on the world market price, which is influenced by global supply and demand.

1/8 Only about 8–10% of the shelf price of bread comes from the cost of wheat itself. The rest is made up of energy, transport, labour, packaging and processing. So even if wheat prices fall sharply, bread prices may only dip slightly, or not at all, if other costs are rising.
