The ambition and motivation of successful athletes betrays them, leading those same athletes to dramatically overwork themselves. The role of a coach is to guide them away from this path.
After 100 years of experimenting, modern coaching has settled on that even the best of the best athletes can only handle ~2-3 hard workouts a week. If you're trying to do more than this as an average athlete, you might ask why you think you can handle more than the pros?
