๐Ÿงต The government recently published data related to the number of people in treatment for substance use, covering April 23-24. The total number of adults in treatment is 310,863, an increase of 7% from the year before. Hereโ€™s our response + thread.

Our staff get a day off for volunteering each year, so last week colleagues from our Birmingham Housing Support Adult Lead Worker service spent time @FareShareMids! ๐Ÿ˜. The team helped with packing delivery orders to gain an insight into how FareShare supports the community ๐Ÿ’ช

Whilst it is positive more people are in treatment, Cranstoun recognises that more must be done to reach the most at risk cohorts who are not in treatment. Enhanced outreach, overdose prevention centres and de-stigmatising seeking treatment for alcohol use are just three examples.

๐Ÿ‘ถ 20% of ppl starting treatment were living with children, either their own or someone elseโ€™s. A further 13% were parents who did not live with children. 27% were women, 16% men. There were 57,121 people living with an adult who is in treatment for alcohol and other drugs.

๐Ÿ  Over a fifth of people (21%) did not have a home. This includes rough sleeping, temp accommodation or โ€˜sofa surfingโ€™. This figure nearly doubles when looking solely at the cohort of people who are using opiates (39%), whilst the figure for people in treatment for alcohol was

๐Ÿ‘ฎCriminal justice referrals made up 15% of all referrals into treatment over the timeframe, with 28% of opiate referrals coming from the criminal justice system.

๐Ÿง  Nearly three in four entering into treatment (72%) said they had a mental health issue. This is stable compared to the year prior, but a significant increase compared to 2018/2019 when the figure was just over half (53%).
