Judge Holderness in Brooklyn guaranteeing pretrial incarceration by setting tens of thousands of dollars in bail on two people experiencing homelessness

Judge Ryan in Manhattan setting bail on almost half of cases seen one evening, including on a person accused of shoplifting, a person with congestive heart failure, and several people who were recommended for release

Some things our watchers have witnessed are: Judge Lewis in The Bronx setting bail on 70% of cases seen one afternoon, including on a 16 year old and an accused person who is indigent

CWNYC’s #BailWatch campaign has been live for almost one month! Our courtwatchers have seen over 150 arraignments, signaling to judges that New Yorkers are looking out for their neighbors and will not permit their rights to be trampled in the dark.

Volunteers will also collect valuable data on specific judges, enabling our partners to better advise partner organizations on release strategies, and better track trends in bail setting for targeted advocacy.

The presence of Court Watch NYC volunteer observers will signal to judges that New Yorkers are looking out for their neighbors and will not permit their rights to be trampled in the dark.

One judge—who has served for over 20 years and whose most recent term has expired—has shown he is unfit for reappointment. Justice Vincent Del Giudice has had 19 sentences overturned by higher courts for being excessive, more than any other active judge.

In a system rife with injustices that disproportionately harm communities of color and poor New Yorkers, our political leaders must not protect the job security of New York’s worst judges.

New York’s state court judges are appointed or elected to terms in office, not given life tenure. Our systems of judicial selection are designed so New Yorkers and our elected officials can evaluate judges’ records—and to ensure that judges earn additional terms on the bench.
