This usually happens because the training, education, and laws don’t serve all Black hair stylists. For instance, weaving and hair braiding aren’t normally done in regulated salons. So, they can’t do certain activities like wash hair as unlicensed professionals.

Forcing braiders into traditional hair school (where they don��t learn cultural competencies in textured hair) was unacceptable. Great win for entrepreneurship! This helps reduce barriers to economic achievement in MA for people of color (mostly women) in beauty!

A win for barbers, hair braiders & cosmetologist in FL. Beauty licensing laws have not been beneficial to women of color OR the poor in the past. 👏🏾 This is a good start!
The law reforms occupational licensing rules for more than 30 professions, including cosmetologists, barbers, food truck operators, interior designers, hair braiders, and dietitians.
