Coral reefs = the support system of 1+ billion people. To protect the livelihoods of so many people, shouldn't a healthy reef ecosystem be considered a human right? Our friends & collaborators provide a perspective šŸ‘‡.

Coral reefs support more than 1 billion people, so their loss would have significant ecological consequences as well as serious repercussions for communities worldwide. Check out our perspective on the link between reef consideration & human rights .

5. As part of our @CORDAP_ funded project to identify resilient corals for restoration, we are re-surveying the marked transects to monitor the 2024 bleaching event. Such repeated assessments provide rare & crucial insights into the dynamics & outcomes of repeat bleaching events.

4. The Environment matters: magnitude and severity of bleaching varied across reef scales, while numerous taxa bleached differently across depth. However, depth is an unlikely refuge from heat stress, as some taxa bleached more at increasing depth.

3. Differential bleaching of taxa: we found broad dispersion of taxon-specific bleaching prevalence, whereby susceptible taxa were found to exhibit bleaching at ~4.5°C-weeks, while widespread and severe bleaching occurred at ≄ 6°C-weeks.

2. Regional optimization of heat stress metrics: we show that a regional optimization of common heat stress metrics reported by @NOAACoral improves heat stress evaluation and better reflects coral bleaching levels observed in situ.

1. Corals reefs in northeast PM Malaysia are presently experiencing the worst regional coral bleaching event on record. Our recent study details the first back-to-back bleaching event previously in 2019-2020: by @Szereday @reefgenomics & AYA. Results šŸ‘‡:.

7. This event is part of the 4th global coral bleaching event. A sad but anticipated milestone. Urgent #climateaction is needed to avoid the extinction of coral reefs this century.

6. Our coral nurseries are largely unbleached. This is due to depth, as we have strategically decided to place nurseries deeper to mitigate the impacts of this event.
