Yes: cautious re-engagement. India dipping its toes, testing the waters, eyes wide open — no trust to jump blind.

It's incorrect to call what's happening between India and China a reset. Re-engagement is a better word.

From sitting on a fence to now sleeping with authoritarians… bad metaphors will keep piling up! .Yet India will continue to do what it does best since 1947: pursue its national interests by dynamically calibrating its position in an evolving world order.

“India - you’re getting in bed with authoritarians. China invaded Aksai Chin and all your territory. They are not your friends. And Russia? Come on!” says Trump’s trade advisor Peter Navarro

For deeper case studies/theoretical insights on Nepal (and Maldives) re the changing nexus of domestic politics and foreign policy in South Asian smaller states, see my chapter with @nicoblar. It's less about if/how much agency -- but more what you do with it given a) state.

As I wrote in this 2020 explainer:."In line with democratisation and competitive nationalism, Nepal’s foreign policy is becoming increasingly politicised. In order to look ahead and repair, revise and revive the bilateral relationship, we must first understand why and how.

Indeed, Kathmandu will say what it must, Delhi and Beijing will do what they want. But let's not forget:.Lipulekh is a self-inflicted wound by KP Oli. His 2020 actions are actually a good example of Nepal's foreign policy agency -- albeit driven by narrow domestic calculations.

Whether it is seen as a friend or foe, China is becoming a resident actor in South Asia. Rising economic, political, cultural, security ties. Thanks @Ramananda @nitingokhale for engaging with our new report. @jabinjacobt . Video:

“India’s credibility as a Global South partner will rest not only on what it commits to but also on how consistently and collaboratively it follows through.”. Read this by @vedavn on Namibia, Africa and the importance of “sectoral wins” where India offers solutions:.

Namibia signing on to India’s UPI is more than a tech diplomacy win, it marks a move toward pragmatic, digital partnerships. No sweeping claims of Indian exceptionalism, just sectoral wins that reflect New Delhi’s willingness to listen. ✍🏽My take in @the_hindu.

Geopolitical options don't grow on trees. You need to invent, create, nurture them. Too many people are looking around saying "what do we do now?" "where do we go now?" . A better question is "what can we do and how long will it take to work?" . There are no free lunches.
