This indicates that reef fishes have a classically “Gleasonian” community structure, with highly individualistic responses to environmental conditions driving patterns of abundance. It also shows that long-term patterns of commonness and rarity are shaped jointly by… (6/7).

We found that reef fishes have a high diversity of demographic responses to environmental fluctuations (response diversity), but species interactions are negligibly weak, relative to the strength of inter-specific density dependence. (5/7).

Extensive simulation work shows that the approach can effectively distinguish between the effects of species interactions versus response diversity (differential responses of species’ demographic rates to environmental fluctuations) in driving community dynamics (4/7).

To obtain species-specific for high-diversity time series, we used a “regularized horseshoe prior” for species interactions, and modeled response diversity as a function of latent environmental variables. (3/7).

We fit a stochastic community dynamics model to highly replicated time series of reef fishes from the Great Barrier Reef, to quantify the roles of interspecific demographic heterogeneity, response diversity, and species interactions on the dynamics of relative abundances (2/7).
