As promised (threatened?), strap in folks, because we are going to spend our Saturday talking about the abandoned, canceled and plain evaporated comics of Image Comics. Much of this is pretty fascinating and not just in a trainwreck kind of way, so stick with me!

With the current eh. "discourse" let me say that some people are into Wanda because "she can rewrite reality" or something while I'm a fan of Wanda because she can flip a dude and was trained by Cap to be able to defend herself without using powers.

Amazingly this formula was not copied nearly as much as you'd expect in comics of the era and it would take until 1975 when Chris Claremont distilled this formula and made it the linchpin of his Uncanny X-Men run. But the FF definitely had it first.

the Ben-Johnny friendly rivalry had no real contemporary counterpart and Kirby and Lee were never above having Reed and Sue, the supposed "serious" members get involved and have some goofy fun. The FAMILY aspect of the FF was there from the start and remained its strength.

This contrasts against other superhero books at the stands in the 60's which were considerably more stoic and stiff-collared. Even Kirby's own Challengers of the Unknown a few years earlier was your standard buttoned-up action book even if it was of course dynamic and inventive.

While it is popular in modern runs to make the FF a very very serious sci-fi drama superhero comic it's important to remember that Kirby and Lee's FF was goofy as shit. The FF formula with the squabbling between Ben and Johnny and team getting into antics was so unique

They have never managed to live up to the hype of Reign of the Alfreds with Steel-Alfred, Alfredboy, Cyborg Alfred and The Alfradicator.

They killed Alfred and now instead of bringing him back, they're pulling all sorts of nonsense. AI Alfred, ghost Alfred, demon-possessed Alfred, Alfred in a dream. Enough.

Marvel still clinging to the idea of announcing BIG IMPORTANT EVENTS and NEW HOT SERIES without naming the creators. If you can't give me a creative team to catch my interest why bother talking about the event at all?.

I do give everything a fair shot, as long as the creator isn't a real-life scumbag, though. Sometimes it works for me, sometimes it doesn't.

All of this is a fancy way of saying if you think Avengers Disassembled and House of M are the foundational and vital comics to understanding the character of the Scarlet Witch then we're going to have a communications issue on our hands.

For me personally having a fanon or at least understanding what appeals to you about a character is healthy behavior and keeps you from being steamrolled by having to adapt to everything that gets put out. Unfortunately it also makes discourse difficult sometimes.

It's a fine line to walk between being a reactionary nostalgia-addled wreck and being an undiscerning consumer who accepts everything when it comes to Big Two superhero stuff. But man, I could not stay sane if I didn't pick and choose between what I want my accepted truth to be.

It's the kind of fix I wish Wanda could get but which I know in my heart of hearts she can never have. I'm so happy for Tigra though, she deserves it.

Jed MacKay fixing Tigra is an impressive feat if you know just what a terrible state she was left in by the 2010s. MacKay has managed to bring her back to her roots and make her cool as fuck without throwing out what she's about or marring her with nonsense retcons.

Yes. the fight scenes in the first 2/3rds are so dope. The bus fight is beautiful as is the construction fight around the building. Great cast too.
