As we wrap up, we're thrilled to announce that the 2023-2024 Mentorship scheme is now open for applications. We are looking for both mentors and mentees. We'll be in touch with the next steps if you are chosen. Stay tuned! 💪 .

"As a mentee, try to talk to your mentor(s) openly. Be transparent about what you like and you don't like. As a mentor, try to be kind and receptive about a mentees' needs". Letícia explains how mentors throughout her career have helped her to move to the career path she wanted.

"As a mentor, you should always try to empathise with trainees' backgrounds, bringing references that relate with their experiences".

Letícia highlights the difficulties of being a woman in science and how mentors / mentorship can help keep women (as well as other underrepresented groups) in science.

"I love science, I know I want to be a scientist, but I can't see anyone that looks like me". Letícia knew she wanted to be a scientist from an early age, but lacked relevant role models. She highlights how a teacher, an early mentor, helped her explore her interest in chemistry.

Letícia outlines her early start in software development and some of her key mentors, including family members!.

Up next we have @LetciaMariaPeq1, a first year PhD student at @CarnegieMellon working in the field of Quantum Chemistry. Letícia will talk about mentorship and cultural differences in their PhD journey.

"Each stage is a new game, with new rules, new questions, and new challenges to navigate". Mentorship needs to occur at every stage of a career, Maricris highlights the importance of cultivating a network of mentors and sharing experiences.

"For this transition, I really needed role models and mentors". Embarking on a career in academia can seem daunting, Maricris explains the challenges faced (both personal and professional) when pursuing a tenure-track position.

"What career to pursue?". Maricris outlines how having access to mentors has helped to bridge the gap between various stages of their career. At each stage, mentorship has been valuable in assessing what next steps to take (e.g. undergraduate study - > graduate school -> postdoc).

Maricris gives a personal account of mentors throughout their life and examines the importance of opportunities at an early stage. Having access to mentors such as teachers or university/college advisors was crucial.

Next up we have Maricris Mayes, who will describe the importance of mentoring and how it has influenced their career so far.
