Advise for young players. Every day is a chance to separate yourself from others off the floor. Don’t be too cool for school. Getting good grades is cool. Having good manners, being polite and communicating like an adult is cool. Be careful who you surround yourself with.

Too many players now days only workout hard when their trainers, friends, coaches, parents, etc. are in the gym. Not enough getting real work in ALONE. Being able to push yourself with no one else around builds mental toughness. How bad do you want it when no one is looking?

Nothing worse than a coaching staff that is too emotional and over reacts to every mistake. Players play tight and are scared to make mistakes. Pick and choose battles. Can’t expect your players to be composed if they look to the sideline and see their coach losing their mind.

JC is awesome because everyone knows their deficiencies and their work ethic is put in the spotlight. Time always tells who has been in the weight room, fixing their shot, working on handles, etc. You get out what you put in. The guys who make it, make the changes. Can’t fake it.

Here at SPSCC we try to focus less on X/O’s and more on skill development. We want to give our players good spacing to showcase their skill sets. Physical, on balance drives and sharing the ball. Work on your craft and be a playmaker.

We try to get our players to find their own rhythm and flow offensively. Every player is different but one thing that is constant... focusing on getting two feet down on paint touches and build off that. Show consistency and then add your own flavor!

Got a ton of skill work in tonight but also a good teaching segment on reading off ball screens and knowing different options. One of the most valuable under-taught skills in basketball in my opinion. Screeners have to always be a threat and be in sync with teammates.

It’s all about the foundation and set ups. Saw a lot of simple ones we use with our guys. First clip: between the legs hesitation to start, all our guys got that. 22 seconds: we rep the same between the legs cross all the time. 28 seconds: my favorite transition move, soft cross.

Big difference between being a promoter and evaluator. If you promote EVERY athlete you come across to help them get seen then that’s awesome. BUT, if you do that, then don’t pull the ��I told you” card when a couple turn out to be good. There are receipts on all the others too…
