Players are concerned with losing weight before the season. Focus on improving athleticism and eat clean without too much of a caloric restriction. Let the training get you in shape if you're an athlete. Do not sacrifice on your diet. It will kill your performance.

In weightlifting the only expectation is that ones work ethic will be tested beyond measure and it is those who decide to stick with the sport the longest that get the most out of it. All you have is time, use it wisely.
