Finally got to visit Penrith Castle on route to Keswick. Defeated on the two occasions by storms, finally on the third visit just rain. Site of General John Lambert's garrison for a period of 1648. #Penrith

#OTD 28th Sept 1887, the Keswick Footpath Preservation Assoc. committee, with about 500 people, asserted the right of public access through Fawe Park following the closure of a long-established footpath and carriageway. I will be at.

As it's #WorldCalligraphyDay, our #ObjectOfTheWeek is this lovely letter from Cromwell's mother Elizabeth, written in July 1643. It's probably the only example of her handwriting and signature - which is lovely and clear (unlike the notation below it!)
