I understand my video has upset some angry folk on twitter/X but my commitment is to the residents of Leith, and they have overwhelmingly told me they support measures to reduce traffic and make the streets safer for them & their kids. Iβll continue fighting to do that.

To those arguing these changes are unpopular with locals, the vast majority of residents I have heard from are in favour. Folk have contacted me to say they can open their windows for the first time without the roar of traffic, and can let their kids play on the street.

This would appear to show what is known as traffic evaporation, where some people choose not to travel and others choose to travel by a different mode (e.g. public transport or walking), thus reducing overall levels of motor traffic.

In particular table 1 of the report, which shows a reduction by an average of 76.6% on new no-through-roads within the scheme; 22.9% on other roads within the scheme and 17.3% on the one boundary road which was measured. Hereβs the table:

Thanks for all the comments in reply. To those arguing the LTN has merely displaced traffic, not reduced it, I would encourage you to read the report (linked to above).

The six-month monitoring report on the #Leith low traffic neighbourhood (#LTN) was published recently. It showed the scheme has been an astonishing success at reducing traffic. So what's next for the Leith LTN? #edinburgh

Reactions to this are depressingly predictable. Politician safety is a real issue and it is entirely appropriate that cllrs should be offered protection. Disagreement and protest is important, but death threats and harassment should be unacceptable.

The Tories don't even pretend to care about climate or sustainable transport, so at least their position is honest (honestly awful, obvs).

No surprise that Lib Dems are total hypocrites on transport & climate. I'd have expected better from SNP councillors though. Both parties have supported ambitious climate & vehicle reduction targets then voted against measures to deliver them. Duplicitous.
