This is the 2nd positive international advisory opinion on climate change, after that of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in 2024. & it comes just before the world’s highest court – the ICJ – is expected to issue its own opinion on a similar question. 3/4.

This came in an advisory opinion in response to a request from Chile & Colombia, seeking clarification on how States must address climate change's impact on human rights. The Court also called on States to tackle climate disinformation, which is an international first. 2/4.

According to a new report, it causes more than 500 deaths a week. Dr Mumtaz Patel, president of the RCP, said “We wouldn’t accept 30,000 preventable deaths from any other cause. We need to treat it with the same seriousness we treat clean water or food.".
