The settlement comes without an admission of wrongdoing. The class is defined as: all current and former members of the CAF and RMCP, and their family members, who received disability benefits from the VAC that were affected by the annual adjustment of the basic pension.

Veterans Affairs Canada is responsible for the benefits and pensions of current and veteran members of the military and the RCMP. Allegedly, since 2002, they had consistently miscalculated disability benefit increases for members of both branches, causing veterans to be underpaid

This is the first federal compensation scheme for this matter. Quebec had apologized for the slaughter and paid $3 million in compensation to former dog sled owners in 2011. A 2006 RCMP investigation of its' own conduct had cleared itself of wrongdoing.
