Luminous beings are we, not just crude matter— wildland firefighter and failed mystic

I have a mechanic buddy in Texas who, inexplicably, charges me 1995 prices for his work. He sleeps in his garage and rebuilds engines on a pool table. He says he’s never left the county. Every night he sits in a plastic chair and drinks beer and throws the cans in this pile

I mourn the loss of regional variety. Sad to see the march of homogeneous monoculture. This age of innovation is also an age of farewell to traditions and customs, accents and idioms. Blessed be those who keep the old ways alive, who collect the old stories & learn the old tricks

Drinking room temp beers with my wizened old mechanic friend in his bachelor shack in south Texas on the edge of the hill country... I've been transported back in time, to a time that is almost gone now, a time I understand and get along in just fine

I try to offset my own inevitable screentime by going out drinking & dancing, small talk with the old men playing dominos around a heater at the feedstore, praying the rosary with a church full of the faithful before Mass, writing letters to distant family & flirting w old ladies
