Last year 150 people volunteered to take part in #TheGreatFuelMoistureSurvey. This week they will collecting samples of heather from across the UK, developing our understanding of the flammability of vegetation during this important time in the #wildfire season 🔥 THANK YOU!

📢📢The Great Fuel Moisture Survey📢📢 Are you able to spare a small amount of your time one day in the spring of 2023 to collect samples of heather in your local UK heathlands and peatlands to support research working towards the development of a UK fire danger rating system?

Through this exciting project @ClaireMBelcher, #CindyLooy, and I are coupling palaeo and modern proxies to explore the complex interaction of climate and fire with the potential fire-adaptive trait of active branch shedding in ancient conifers (cladoptosis).

It was a pleasure to take part in @BBCCountryfile today. The summer drought special highlighted the plight of farmers, wildlife and wildfires during drought conditions. We will have to learn to adapt to climate change. @DWFireRescue @UofE_Research @rayannevitali @ukfdrs

The UK's “fire weather index”, which estimates how conducive weather conditions are for wildfires, reached its highest ever level on 19 July, the same day the record-breaking heatwave peaked at 40.3°C in Coningsby, Lincolnshire

Agricultural land provides the largest area of vegetation fire fuels in England - unlike other UK countries. Probably the easiest fuel to manage in the UK. Analysis by T. Nikonovas @ukfdrs based on two decades of satellite data.

As climate changes the risk from wildfire needs to be considered in more activities, breaking up crop continuity and not planting close to property may reduce yields but will result in less loss if fire happens ⁦⁦@NFUtweets@NFCC_FireChiefs

Max. fire weather index for England during the July heatwave was way above anything we have seen in the last two decades. No wonder fire services were so stretched and we had an unprecedented property loss linked to vegetation fires. ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis by T. Nikonovas @UKFDRS

@DrTELS This really puts in to perspective all those predictions we wrote about last year in the CCRA3 wildfire report - what is happening now really shows the stark reality

I can't believe what I'm seeing here. This is horrific. The UK has *never* seen wildfires like this before. These look to be multiple wildland fires that have spread into urban areas. Unprecedented loss of buildings, I just hope no one has been hurt.
