Sam would later play for the Washington Senators before retiring in 1969. He was inducted into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.

The Baltimore Orioles signed Sam in 1960, launching his minor league career. He made his Major League debut in 1963, and his first full season in 1964 saw him hit 22 home runs and notch 71 RBIs.

Sam was a standout three-sport athlete at Williston, earning All-State honors in 1956. He went on to attend Tennessee State University, where he played quarterback on the football team and helped the basketball team win three consecutive NAIA championships in 1957, 1958, & 1959.
