We will be at the Oct 1 Celebrate Science Indiana fest, (State Fairgrounds). The event focuses on the importance of studying science & the joy of discovery. The theme is “Protecting Our Earth.” Our booth is about the scientific aspects of a circular economy. Stop by Saturday.

Understanding Expiration Dates: 80% of people throw out food prematurely due to confusion. All dates are up to the manufacturer to determine & may not indicate food safety. (No matter what language is used on infant formula, it should be tossed according to the date posted.)

Alternatives to grass lawns have many benefits. They require less watering & fertilizers, and don’t need mowing. Native plants attract more bees & butterflies, while herbs help repel bugs and can be used for cooking. (Check local ordinances.)

Gleaners provides food and critical grocery items through a network of food distribution partners. Through their work, food that may have otherwise been landfilled is getting to people who need it, thus strengthening our community and contributing to a stronger circular economy.

Some folks bringing the problem of food waste to light are Freegans & dumpster divers. They collect & expose usable food that gets thrown away. The number of people who are unsure of their next meal and the amount of usable food that is thrown out is a big problem.

Kroger’s Zero Hunger Zero Waste Foundation is changing the way we address food. While 42M Americans struggle with hunger, 35% of food produced in the US is thrown out. The foundation provides resources to those who need them & grants to communities across the country.
