Police cracked down on nationwide protests and responded with unlawful use of force, mass arbitrary arrests and suppression of information.

Mozambican police used reckless, unnecessary and excessive force against protesters. Police unlawfully used firearms and less lethal weapons, killing and injuring protesters and bystanders. This was in violation of human rights norms and standards. https://t.co/97ZZtnzleM

When Chapo and Mondlane met and did not talk about justice and accountability, that was a huge READ FLAG. Justice and accountability are extremely important for the country to move forward.

Yes, Venâncio Mondlane and Daniel Chapo shook hands on 23 March. Yes, they called for peace. But just handshake doesn’t fix. We need concrete action. The attack on MC Trufafá is a dangerous move.

Since then, targeted abductions and assassinations of opposition members have followed. If you think this is an exaggeration — keep scrolling. The pattern is well-documented. Check this urgent action here https://t.co/aM8cwoM10y

Death squad activity never stopped — it intensified last year with the killings of Lawyer Elvino Dias & Senior Podemos member Paulo Guambe, on 19 October, 2 days before the beginning of protests. Both worked closely with Venâncio Mondlane. Both were shot with over 20 bullets.

This afternoon, I opened my social media and read the news: Joel Amaral, aka MC Trufafá, was shot by 3 bullets, one of them in the head. Mc Trufafá is one of Venâncio Mondlane’s advisors, who became popular during the Oct 2023 elections for creating viral songs for opposition.

This morning I was happily chatting with a friend about the day I texted him last year in the very first days of protests, begging him to stay safe. He is a fearless activist and I was so scared for him. For a moment, I thought the death squads were gone. I was wrong🧵 🪡

Here are some of the stories we should not forget: On 5 March, designer Alcina Nhaume, 31, was shot in the face inside her atelier in Maputo, Mozambique’s capital, when security forces deployed to disperse protests in Michafutene, opened fire. A bullet pierced a metal barrier

What do I think of this? I am happy to see a new page being written, but my final position on this will depend on what this meeting was about and what’s happening afterwards. I hope there is a genuine interest from both parties to calm the tension in the country. Even though

Most businesses and schools were closed today, specifically in Maputo and Matola. Just few hours ago, someone was shot dead by security forces, as groups were trying to peacefully get speakers outside, play music and celebrate Azagaia and others who they consider heroes.

Now, in his shadow government, Mondlane has declared March 18 as a new National Heroes’ Day (a holiday), calling on people to honor Azagaia, Samora Machel, Elvino Dias (his lawyer, who was shot dead), and others who fought for the people during their lifetime.
