Bakes done, going with 7 texture sets. I always bake at double the show values and then crush them down in substance. (most of the time this achieves better results, but occasionally you get issues). ----.#3dmodeling #art

Compared to letting the packing engine do its job THEN going over by hand subtitling squeezing and re-scaling islands. NEW TD: 32px/in UV coverage 83%

Gonna use the magazine of my current project (2048x1024). heres what you'd get if you simply let your packing engine do its job (I'm using UV packmaster 2 here) A TD of 29px/in (at 2048 res). And UV coverage of only 72% its not great

Something to note when doing UV's. filling in space is much more important than small warping. Certain warping is inexcusable and will look bad when you get to textures, but scaling multiple islands slightly horizontally or vertically makes no noticeable texture errors.EXAMPLE:.

for context I didnt know what baking was until like 3 months into learning 3D modelling. That model on the left is the first one I ever tried baking down from a highpoly and good lord did it not work.

Showing progress is important. New 3D artists can get a false idea of how fast people get good. You see a portfolio filled with great work, but you dont see the hundreds of pieces before those that arent shown. Nobody starts out great. 2019 vs 2024. #3dartwork
