I think the standardised form of Malayalam is closely related to the central Kerala dialect.
Tholkappiyam refers 12 variants of old Tamil. There is no account of any "Cheran Tamil", Kerala had 4 variants which evolved to the modern Malayalam variants. (Also the lots of Malayalam and Tamil languages)
