Excited to announce that colleagues & I have identified a new #concussion sign that's been hiding in plain sight. We named it Spontaneous Headshake After a Kinematic Event, or SHAAKE. Seen in movies & cartoons, it hasn't been in protocols, but should be.

My comment below on #CTE and violence got the @nature quote of the day. Thanks @guardian for a chance to talk about what we know and what we don't about this important potential relationship.

Concussions are more real when you can see the athlete's face. Good reminder that football helmets often hide the hits - making them less jarring to watch. This is Jake Trbojevic's 3rd concussion in a year in Australia's National Rugby League.

Charlie Offerdahl's experience at Colorado shows how far the #concussion culture has changed. We once thought those who walked away were weak. Now @DeionSanders gives Charlie the chance to say goodbye and honors him & his scholarship. Worth the watch:

To expand on that flaw - the truth is that athletes are frequently cleared, then have symptoms again when they return - but they don't self-report because they could lose their jobs or don't understand the risk. We need more education & better tools.

Kudos to Garry Ringrose for self-reporting #concussion symptoms. But the fact he was held out last Saturday due to his concussion - then played Tuesday as a substitute & remained cleared to play - is a reminder that concussion return to play still flawed.

Greg kept journals which you can read in the story. At the end, he was trying to sell drawings like this for money in a Whole Foods parking lot. If you or a loved one is having similar struggles after contact sports or military service, reach out us at

Greg Newman was voted "most inspirational player" for the 13-0 Utah Utes in 2008. In 2009, he declined, eventually diagnosed as bipolar or schizoaffective, depending on the doc. He was found dead last year at 38 near a highway onramp. Stage 2 CTE. Don't ignore this story.

A year after Greg Newman's career ended his mind began to betray him. The ensuing two decades were a tragic slide. Unhoused before his death, Greg's "imaginary world was more real to him than this.” On a family’s search for the answer they long suspected.

I'd like to take a moment to honor Robert Thomas "Tom" Cooksey, a former Georgia Tech, Atlanta Falcons & CFL football player who died at age 69. I appreciate that he supported @ConcussionLF & his family has made that part of his legacy. Powerful obit:

I’ve seen the brain damage contact sports can cause – we all need to take concussion and #CTE more seriously. Great article from Alan Pearce, PhD.

If more isn’t done to combat concussion and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, more families will be grieving tragic deaths.

How Black Lung Came Roaring Back to Coal Country. Once nearly eradicated, the “old man’s disease” is back & suffocating younger miners. #CTE has a similar cultural component, passed down to children by shared sports participation among fathers & sons.

This study on 631 deceased American footballers shows dose-response best (more years = more hits = more #CTE), but it's also seen in ice hockey & rugby. If you aren't trying to minimize head impacts in practice, you are causing preventable cases of CTE.

It's great to see #CTE Prevention Protocol principles (reducing collisions, minimum age to tackle) promoted in Australia. @NRL comments show they are in dire need of education on CTE dose-response before they damage the brains of another generation.

Doctors say the damage being done is preventable, with drastic change. But many ‘old guard’ players, coaches and fans say protocols have already gone too far.

NFL widows struggled to care for players w/#CTE. They say a study from the Harvard @PlayersStudy minimizes their pain. "Why would a researcher jump to ‘the media’ when trying to draw conclusions when they didn’t collect any information about the media?"

Check out this important study on a surprising number of #CTE diagnoses in a homeless population in Europe👇. The first homeless former football player diagnosed with #CTE at @bu_cte was Ryan Hoffman, story here:
