Today, after six months bashing my head against a brick wall, trying without success to get a worthy story published, I quit my job at @odtnews in protest. To say I’m gutted would be an understatement, but I feel the need to stand up for some basic journalistic principles.

Time: Time off at every stoppage. Shot clock at every stoppage. Play on for all injuries, unless medics/injured obstruct play. Player causing stoppage for injury must immediately leave field. Free kick for time wasting.

Offside: Everyone in front of the ball freezes until put onside.

Tackles: Below the belly. Penalty for above the belly. Cards for deliberate head contact/foul play.

Mauls: Players must enter from onside, remain onside if bound. Sacking fine, turnover if unplayable.

Rucks: Tackled player can place ball. No lifting/hands allowed. Players must enter from onside. Rucking the ball is fine. Penalties for direct contact to the head. Cards for deliberate foul play.

Lineouts: No lifting or supporting. No gap required, must stay onside.

Scrums: Team with put in decides when to engage. No hands until it’s hooked. Don’t deliberately collapse the scrum (penalty), but: If ball playable, play on.
