Kids are allowed being pissed that they go all the way through fucking college then send out literally hundreds of job applications that go fucking nowhere only to wind up with a job that they could have done at 15 and can't cover independent adult living expenses
@ChrisExpTheNews
If you go to college and don’t get any connections that can hook you up with a good first job, you kind of missed half the point of going to college.

Yeah. Whether I’m teaching Chem or algebra or literature, I always figure out some time to shoehorn in a career interests test + research 3 options (dream job, safe job, weird job) assignment. Blows my mind this isn’t done every year for every student after 6th grade

@Gumbo_hymns
to the people who excel at networking it’s inherent, they believe it’s unteachable. like sales in a way. i hate the job market + feel for you. I dropped out after getting pre-reqs in 2017, after the majors lead professor suggested switching my major. it made me reevaluate 100%

One of the biggest missing skills many people entering skilled workforce are missing is the ability to do things without being explicitly instructed. So this works as a signal that they don’t need their hand held through every facet of life.
@ChrisExpTheNews
@Gumbo_hymns
my parents taught me that, and also have the experience of hitting career dead ends and having to retrain/go back to school so my brothers and I were prepared for that. it blows my mind that schools and guidance counselors haven’t caught on in the slightest still
@ChrisExpTheNews
@Gumbo_hymns
are all students meant to meet someone who likes them enough to boost their career? Why are jobs that don't directly deal with the public personality based? Who are they meant to meet? The dean, rich friend, rich friends parents, teachers whose ass do you have to kiss forever?
@ChrisExpTheNews
@Gumbo_hymns
What they don't want to admit is that the confusing nature of "making it" in the system is by design. They don't want all of us doing well, because then they'd have no excuse not to treat us better.
@ChrisExpTheNews
@Gumbo_hymns
That’s funny because one of mine goes to community college and she gets emails every single day about internships, career fairs, lectures, etc etc related to what they’re studying
@ChrisExpTheNews
@Gumbo_hymns
Also, try being neurodivergent and withdrawn and a first gen college student. No one explains this stuff! And networking is impossible when you aren't a super social person.
@ChrisExpTheNews
@Gumbo_hymns
I was told by older peers about the importance of internships and networking in your 3rd and 4th years. I do think people should be made aware of this though.
@ChrisExpTheNews
@Gumbo_hymns
Well, that's why you have an advisor & there's a lot of intern opportunities to get your foot in the door. There's also counseling & career counseling to help you manage & start a path.
@ChrisExpTheNews
@Gumbo_hymns
Okay but like, you are? It's made extremely clear literally EVERYWHERE that getting connections is extremely important in university. Guidance counselors, hs business classes, univeristy professors, alumni, resources online, etc?
@ChrisExpTheNews
@Gumbo_hymns
“networking” has been covered in about half of my business classes. It should be integrated into alllll sorts of classrooms in my opinion.
@ChrisExpTheNews
@Gumbo_hymns
Idk they constantly drilled into us the importance of attending career fairs, joining student orgs and applying for internships. The truth is a majority of students just want to do the bare minimum of passing and hoping the degree is enough.
@ChrisExpTheNews
@Gumbo_hymns
Networking is very much a rich kid thing, I went to a public school and they never taught it. However, in the private school I worked (only a cleaner) its everywhere.
@ChrisExpTheNews
@Gumbo_hymns
I know what you’re saying, but truly if your parents didn’t tell you about internships then your counselor should have. You need at least 3 though some students get 4 internships (one every summer break).
@ChrisExpTheNews
@Gumbo_hymns
You can figure stuff out on your own without being told.
In fact, you should probably be doing this on a regular basis if you want to make it through college.
If you have to be told the most obvious thing, maybe college isn’t the right choice for you.
