Super grateful for this award & excited for the plans! New stochastic models for understanding spatial mechanisms of gene expression (e.g., from spatial transcriptomics) alongside new peer support networks for first-gen students across career stages (myself included!).

the question & approach were inspired by lots of cool work on the “data science” of collective motion, all with more insightful & fancy methods than ours, e.g., neighbor interactions by @DannyRajM1, TDA by @chadtopaz.

we explore other odds & ends, including how well this generalizes to other models, e.g., the D’Orsogna model

We find the answer is yes! If you do the right transformation of your data (here, a classical Vicsek model), simple PCA distinguishes the agents over an intrinsic timescale we quantify

A preprint with my @mcsb_uci master's student Pei Tan! We ask if you can tell whether a collective has more than 1 type of agent while being clueless about all other underlying details and interactions.

fun times at #SIAMDS23 with brilliant mathematicians able to quantify anything except the right amount of food to order! already looking forward to 2025!.

can anyone recommend a modern undergrad math biology text? I love the classics (Edelstein-Keshet, deVries, Murray) but I feel they're too focused on model analysis rather than the holistic process of model construction + data comparison that current math bio often entails.
