He had learnt it during the early 1900s from Thomas Beard, a villager living in St Day, from which it took its name.

The composer of the carol and its melody are lost to time, but it was first collected and transcribed by Gilbert Hunter Doble from the singing of W.D. Watson; the Borough of Penzance's Head Gardener.

'Personent hodie', the oldest carol in Chansons' upcoming concert, was originally published in 1582 in Finnish song book Piae Cantiones, but has roots that date as far back to the 12th century.

Did you know carols can be traced back to 4th century Rome? In Britain, in the Middle Ages, they were sung by Wassailers who visited from house to house, singing songs in return for food and beer.

We will be joined by professional soloists: soprano Colleen Nicoll, mezzo-soprano Ulrike Wutscher, tenor David Douglas and baritone Phil Gault. Instrumental accompaniment is led by organist Kevin Duggan and cellist Susan Smart, with string players from the City of Perth Sinfonia.

We open our 2022–23 season on Saturday October 1st at 7:30 pm in the delightful setting of St John's Kirk, with an evening of choral music featuring Bach's ‘Jesu Meine Freude’ and Mozart's Missa Brevis in D major.
