Good move by eSafety Commissioner- these sites are generally used for peer-to-peer abuse. But it’s still not illegal to download tech designed specifically to generate child sexual abuse material. My bill fixed that. Govt needs to act asap. #auspol

The platforms, which can be used to make real people appear nude in photos and videos, have been used in several high-profile cases in Australian schools.

This looks promising! This is what I called for last week and is long overdue. But it should be independent and well-resourced, not part of the Department. #auspol

1/3 of people in Curtin rent - in the least affordable part of the least affordable capital city. We must fix the supply problem so young people can afford to live close to their families, work and communities. #auspol

With AI moving so fast, we need new structures so government can respond to risks. Australia urgently needs an AI Safety Institute, to monitor risks, advise/support regulators and collaborate with other countries. See full discussion paper on my website. #auspol

The gambling lobby is releasing ‘research’ today saying someone else is the problem-straight out of the tobacco playbook. Get ready for @AlboMP to start parroting these lobbyist lines. They are fighting the ad ban so hard because ads work. #auspol #gamblingreform

One of the few productivity levers the Government can actually influence is R&D - we are way behind other OECD countries. Yet the govt is cutting another 350 jobs at CSIRO, our well-respected science agency. This is mad. #auspol
abc.net.au
The prime minister, when in opposition, accused the Coalition of "hollowing out" the CSIRO. Now, following the announcement 350 research positions at the organisation will be cut, he is being accused...

The Coalition says it will reduce emissions. The plan seems to be to expand fossil fuels and hope for future magic ‘breakthrough technologies’. That’s not a plan. It’s irresponsible, short term, populist, magical thinking.

Libs have an energy hope, not a plan. Saying we’re open to (more expensive) coal, gas & nuclear, rather than investing in infrastructure needed to use (cheaper) renewables will not solve the cost problem. And supporting the ‘vibe’ of Paris without complying won’t fool anyone.

It’s very difficult to avoid unnecessary plastic packaging. That’s why the long-awaited packaging regulations should include reductions in plastic packaging, not only more recycling and recycled content. #auspol

We took a walk with leading plastics campaigner Cip Hamilton through a supermarket to search for wasteful wrapping. It didn’t take long.

Green iron (using renewables to process iron ore) is key to WA’s future prosperity. This is a positive step - policy certainty is needed to give investors confidence. #auspol

Roger Cook has unveiled an ambitious plan to decarbonise WA’s biggest export, iron ore, while simultaneously building a new green steel industry from scratch.

AI deepfakes are at their most dangerous right now - as the tech gets more convincing but while people still think they can believe what they see. The Govt has promised a media literacy plan, but there’s no timeline. #auspol

A ‘free vote’ is when MPs can vote in line with their values instead of what the party says. It’s rare. Isn’t it weird that this is not the norm? Australians want to see gambling ads banned. But the Labor party is in the way. #auspol #gamblingreform
abc.net.au
Andrew Wilkie has asked the PM to allow a free vote on banning gambling advertising and it appears many Labor MPs would support it.

It’s a big call saying that producing more fossil fuels will help the world get off fossil fuels. Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t work like that.
abc.net.au
A secret report undermines the WA government's claim that domestic gas production is helping the rest of the world decarbonise, while the state's own greenhouse gas emissions rise.

Today in the House, the crossbench is proposing many constructive amendments to the Environmental Protection reforms. The Govt has agreed to one of mine - public annual reporting on the activities of the Offsets Fund so we can see if it’s actually delivering. #auspol

This Bill would stop politicians from duping voters into sending them personal data in the postal voting application process. The AEC hates it & so do voters but the parties don’t want to give it up. Don’t use the reply paid envelope- it’s not to the AEC! #auspol #electoralreform

You know things are bad when gambling companies suggest reform! @AlboMP can be led by harmful companies or listen to Australians sick of gambling ads. There’s no evidence that banning ads pushes people offshore. #auspol #gamblingreform

A well-resourced national regulator (as recommended in Murphy Report) would be better equipped to address these sites. Despite the PM’s comments, European experience shows regulating Aust gambling companies won’t drive big increases in offshore gambling. #gamblingreform #auspol
