Strong encryption is essential to protecting human rights, securing sensitive communications, and ensuring trust in the digital economy. Canada should reject proposals that compromise digital security in the name of border control.

Weakening encryption undermines civil liberties, exposes vulnerable communities to surveillance and abuse, and increases systemic risks that hostile actors will inevitably exploit.

Earlier this week, CDT joined civil society orgs, companies, & cybersecurity experts, including members of the Global Encryption Coalition, to urge the Canadian government to withdraw Bill C-2, the so-called Strong Borders Act.
