In my youth, I had an exhausting asshole friend. Eventually I extricated myself from that relationship, but by that point I had a solid friendship with his father Don. And Don had a good friend from his youth, Vern, who played in a band in the Twin Cities, Last Laugh.

Upsetting that I didn't know. For which I have only myself to blame. And then in speaking with him earlier this evening, I find out that Vern died this August. It didn't sound like a good end. Never got to say goodbye. Never got to play for him. I'm sorry.

For various reasons that mostly have to do with my personal dysfunctions, I am very bad at staying in touch with people. I just found out that Don had a heart attack last year. He's recovered. He's doing better now. But it's still upsetting that he went through that.

Vern was a thorny, abrasive, charming man. He toiled in restaurants until he became a chef. But then he quit to drive cab in order to better support his family. Don is my friend that I've neglected. I don't know what Vern was to me, but he was an important part of my life.

And, yes, his children did indeed start crying. He made my friends laugh saying I was the kind of guy that reads books about books [true]. He painstakingly wrote out the basics of guitar playing on lined notebook paper for me. In a sense, he is the only guitar teacher I've had.

LOCUST ABORTION TECHNICIAN-era Butthole Surfers, Living Colour, Steve Vai's FLEXIBLE, et al. He introduced me to King Crimson. Specifically he told me it was the music that made his children cry -- and then he blasted a track from VROOOM at deafening volume.

He primarily played one of those Ampeg Dan Armstrong Lucite guitars with a wood grain pickguard. When I expressed admiration for Ace Frehley's vibrato, he played me some Brian Eno. As much as he loved the bands of his youth like The Stones, he still had adventurous ears.

They played First Avenue a few times. Put out a tape or two. Sort of dirty rock and roll -- not completely dissimilar to The Reverend Horton Heat, but admittedly more of a bar band. I believe at least half of their set was covers. Vern was one of their two guitarists.

Earlier at the gas station: <Upon seeing a man in a @slipknot tee-shirt.> "Dude, Slipknot!" "Fucking-A!" "But . . . you're not wearing a mask. As a Slipknot fan, you should be disposed to wearing a mask." "Fuck you!" "Okay then."

And so we end our silence. This country is unwell. Our leadership, and the system it works within, is diseased. We did not want our silence to be taken as tacit approval of the subjugation and murder of people of color, of the poor, of anyone. Hate must not win. IV of IV.

As such, our return -- and let it be known, we will return -- may be some time in the making. So that, my friends, is the status of Ceaseless Becoming. No announcement was anticipated until that of our triumphant return. And yet, we could not remain silent. III of IV.
